Cross country runs to the winner’s circle

NIOBRARA - A depleted Randolph cross country team competed in the Niobrara/Verdigre Cross Country Meet at Niobrara State Park Sept.5.

To be fair, one runner was ill for the meet, but when you have three runners on the team - the description may fit.

What the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals lacked in quantity, the two varsity runners, one girl and one boy, made up for in quality.

Emily Gilliland placed eighth in the girls’ race at the park and Kamdin Worlein placed 15th for the Cardinals.

Gilliland was two minutes faster than her time last week and the course at Niobrara State Park is one of the tougher courses in the area. She completed her race in 26 minutes, 46 seconds.

Worlein ran his 5k one minute faster than his performance the previous week which got him in the medals at 23:54.

Delani Runnels of Niobrara/Verdigre won the girls’ competition in 20:29 with Hattie Kumm of Bloomfield/Wausa coming in second at 23:39.

Neligh-Oakdale won the team title by two points ov er Bloomfield/ Wausa 14-12. Creighton was third with 19.

Luke Woockman of Bloomfield/Wausa won the boys’ division in 18 minutes, 15-seconds; Conner Rohrer of Creighton was second in 18:49.

The Cardinals are set to run in the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational on Sept. 12 at Cedar View Country Club in Laurel.
