1944: Logan Center church gets new pastor

Sept. 6, 1944

LAUREL- Rev Ivan Kilpatrick who has been pastor at Lamar has been appointed as the new pastor of the United Brethren Church at Logan Center and is expected to hold services here next Sunday. He will move his wife and two children to the parsonage the last of the week.

Rev. E.C. King who has been pastor the last three years has been transferred to Marquette and will move his family to that place on Thursday.

Sept. 6, 1944

LAUREL- W.W. (Bill) Lukes, Laurel barber for many years, has leased his shop for a year to Chris Jensen of North Bend and will spend a year doing outside work for the benefi t of his health. Jensen took possession of the shop the first of the month and has moved his family to this city. They are living in the Dimick building on main street for the present. Lukes tells us that his plans are indefinite but he expects to remain in Laurel. Jensen is an experienced workman and will keep the shop at a high standard. We welcome him and his family to Laurel.

Sept. 6, 1944

LAUREL- Miss Wanda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Huetig and Miss Shirley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Ross won first place at the Cedar County Fair with their demonstration “Arrangement of Flowers in a Home.”

Sept. 8, 1949

COLERIDGE — The local baseball team took a 9-6 decision over St. Helena of the Cedar County league here Thursday night. Coleridge had an 8-2 lead in the fifth, but St. Helena closed the gap with four runs in the sixth.

COLERIDGE — A truck driven by Elmer Hintz, loaded with several tons of gravel, dropped through the scales of the Great Plains Supply Co. Saturday afternoon. The truck dropped down several feet to the bottom of the pit under the scales. A tractor with the assistance of several men pulled the truck out of the pit.

Sept. 8, 1949

COLERIDGE — Coleridge 4-Hers are hitting the jackpot at the Nebraska State Fair this week. By Wednesday local 4-Hers had won a total of five blue ribbons.

COLERIDGE — The school lunch program, inaugurated here this year, was well received the first week of school. An average of 125 stu dents each day were served the noon meals the opening week.

Sept. 9, 1954

LAUREL — Judy Fahnestock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Fahnestock of Laurel, pictured in the Advocate is shown with the cup she won at “Vacation Village,” Lake Okoboji, IA on Aug. 20.

Competing in a field of 37 other girls, she is 1954 winner of a contest that is held ev ery year. She is five years old.

Sept. 9, 1954

LAUREL — The football season for the Laurel High School will be officially opened Friday with the opening game to be played at Hartington. The squad, under the coaching supervision of Bill Norvell, has been working out since a week before school opening and will put their ability to test for the first time Friday night.

Members of this year’s squad include Bob Anholtz, Duane Burns, Ronnie Chederquist, Dan Dresden, Verneal Gade, Eldon Haisch, Clark Heydon, Ronnie Jensen, Rodney Johnson, George Kiefer, Donald Lipp, Bill Mallatt, Ed Mittelstadt, Dick Puntney, Dick Rimel, Harlan Shively, Bill Schutte, Richard Schutte, Vonnie Tangeman, Bob Taylor, Don Thompson, Harold Thompson. Bill Urwiler and Bobby Dickey. Of this squad roster, 11 players are let termen of last year.

Sept. 9, 1954

LAUREL — Adele Paulsen, daughter of Mrs. Gus Paulsen and Marlene Urwiler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Urwiler are teaching in the Plainview Public Schools this year.

Miss Paulsen is the second grade instructor and Miss Urwiler teaches the third grade class at Plainview.
