COLERIDGE — The Coleridge Fire Department honored their Chief George V. Hefner Wednesday for his service of 30 years to the department. Hefner has been Chief for 14.

COLERIDGE — The Bulldogs handed the Wakefield Trojans 10 points in the opening minutes of the second outing this year and then completely shut down all Wakefield offensive attempts from that moment on.

COLERIDGE — The opening volleyball contest by the Coleridge Chargers was lost to Ponca 15-11, 6-15, 14-16. Coleridge won the first game of the evening by coming from behind 3-9 in a tough contest.

COLERIDGE — Cedar County was well represented at the Nebraska State Fair this year with 96 4-H exhibits entered and 16 youth participating in 4-H contests and activities in Lincoln.

LAUREL- This was an extraordinary summer for Dawn Westadt as she performed in concert in atheist-oriented Russia and Finland for three weeks sandwiched in between concerts throughout the United States. Westadt traveled with the Outreach for Christ International singers for two and a half months.

LAUREL- Art work by Jim Dickey, son of Bob and Mary Dickey of Laurel has been selected recently to be a part of the Crayola Dream Makers Exhibition. His work is one of 75 pieces representing the north central United States.
Dickey received a commemorative plaque featuring a photograph of his work. Dickey’s art work will also be featured in the September issue of School Arts Magazine.

LAUREL- The Laurel Bears put together an impressive first game of the season Friday night against the Randolph Cardinals.
Inspite of some good offensive moves, the Bears fell to the Cardinals 27-13.

LAUREL- Ida and Ernest Urwiler celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married Aug 29, 1929 at Bazile Mills, NE.
They have three children: Marguerite Prescott of Sioux City, IA, Armin of Laurel and Daryle of Pender. The Urwilers have lived all their married life in the Laurel area.

LAUREL- Lee Havorka, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cal Havorka, passed the Captains examination in the United States Merchant Marines, given by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Study in Baltimore, MD., where he is also attending advanced Radar and Fire-fighting classes.
This license entitles Capt.
Havorka to captain any ship of any tonnage in all waters worldwide.

LAUREL- Corey Slagle of West Point was one of the Nebraska allstars competing in the National Baseball Congress Junior World Series in Springfield, MO.
Eleven and 12-year old boys were chosen to play on this team after coaches scouted teams from West Point, Beemer, Wisner, Scribner and Fremont.
Slagle is the son of Cindy Slagle of West Point and Jim Slagle of Laurel. Craig Moore son of Larry and Elaine Moore of Fremont, was also a member of the team. His father was a former basketball coach in the Laurel school system.

LAUREL- Fifty one ladies competed in the Cedar View Country Club Ladies’ Club Tournament held Aug. 20 and 29.
Winning the first flight championship was Ginny Hansen with a total score of 89; Donna Buss, 2nd; Jan Casey, 3rd and Sandra King 4th.

HARTINGTON — Write-in candidates for the county race are making what seemed to be another typical election year anything but that.
Don Hoesing, St. Helena, filed an affidavit Monday to put his name on the November general election ballot as a write-in candidate for the position of Cedar County Assessor. If elected he would serve a four-year term.
He is the fourth person this year to announce their intentions to seek election as a write-in.
