Bears fall to Pender in Haskell Field shootout

LAUREL - A valiant comeback fell just short as the visiting Pender Pendragons held on for a 49-42 win here at Haskell Field as the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears fell to 0-2 for the young football season.

Pender got out to a 27-6 advantage in the early stages of the second 12-minute session before the Bears put together a comeback to take a 28-27 lead by the intermission, tied the score again in the third quarter then went ahead 42-34 in the fourth quarter.

The Pendragons scored back-to-back touchdowns to end the game and take the 49-42 victory on a 47-yard Owen Kneifl run late in the game.

After an Eli Haisch sprint to the end zone from 63 yards out in the first quarter, the Pendragons led 27-6 early in the second frame and the Bears got busy climbing back into the contest.

Gibson Roberts took off on a 16-yard run to pay dirt and after the conversion was good, the score was 27-14.

Roberts hit Drey Puppe from 12 yards out to make it 27-20 then plunged across the goal line from the one to make it 27-26 before the Bears took their first lead of the game with a successful conversion try.

LCC remained in the lead until the final 12 minutes.

The Pendragons scored on a pass play in the fourth to go up 34-28, but it took the Bears and Connor Korth to take the ensuing kickoff back 65 yards to tie the game at 34-34.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge regained the lead when Roberts got his third rushing touchdown, this one from two yards out and another successful conversion put the Bears up 42-34.

They couldn’t hold the advantage however as Pender tied the score with a pass and conversion then took the lead when Owen Kneifl, who would finish his night 285 yards on his 25 carries and scoring four TD’s, rambling 47 yards for the go ahead touchdown late in the game.
