BEEMER - The Hartington-Newcastle girls’ and boys’ cross country teams had a successful jaunt around the Indian Trails Golf Course here Sept. 5 with the Wildcats bringing home the runner-up plaque and the Lady Wildcats finishing just out of second with 71 points.
The Homer boys and girls won their respective divisions with the Knights outrunning the Wildcats 3267 and the Lady Knights outdistancing West Point-Beemer 58-62.
The Lady Wildcats were next. Dawson Meyer of Oakland-Craig won the boys race with Jaiden Anderson of Archangels Catholic second and Gannon Pfister of Ponca third.
Kyla Krusemark of Pender was the girls champion with Lilly Harris of Homer the runner up, Ava Brennan of Ponca was third.
The Wildcats placed two runners in the top 15 paced by the Elks brothers.
Alex Elks came in sixth while Adam was right on his heels in seventh.
“This was definitely a bigger meet,” HNS boys coach Tanner Fischer said. “It was awesome to see our boys not shy away from this challenge, even being down a runner, they managed For Immediate Release
to get it done and bring home the runner-up plaque.”
Isaac Herdandez-Santiago was just out of the medals in 19th, Aaron Wortmann placed 45th and Braeden Kleinschmit placed 76th.
Carmen Buschkamp was the top Lady Wildcat runner finishing sixth as the HNS girls also got two runners in the top 10.
Claire Rolfes placed eighth overall in the field.
“I was very impressed with our girls,” said Lady Wildcat coach Lisa Rolfes. “This was a very difficult course and the girls really stepped up and stayed strong mentally.”
Isabel Rolfes came in 21st, and Ryell Haug came in 48th to round out the Lady Wildcat runners.
The Hartington-Newcastle cross country teams will be back in action Sept. 12 at the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational in Laurel then head to Wayne for the Wayne Invite on Sept.16.
