Blowout

Wildcats put 74 on the board against Trojans

WAKEFIELD - Cole Rosener’s decision to play football for his senior year has proven to be a good move and a very valuable move for the Hartington-Newcastle football fortunes this fall.

The former cross country standout rushed for 269 yards on just nine carries to lead the Wildcats to a nearly shocking, 74-6 victory over Wakefield on the road Sept. 6 after rushing for 180-plus yards in his first varsity football game last week.

Rosener rushed for 190 yards on his five touchdown carries on his way to the 269-yard outing.

And he’s far from the only weapon coach Rusty Fuller and the Wildcats have in the arsenal.

Quarterback, Cole Heimes scored twice in his 10 carries and tossed a couple of touchdown passes while accumulating another 169 yards through the air.

Will Feilmeier, who had a productive offensive performance caught three of the Heimes aerials for 80 yards, including a 66-yard score and rushed for another 58 yards on just three carries.

Rosener got things going in the opening quarter with a 59-yard dash to the end zone just 53 seconds into the contest and after he ran in the conversion, the score was 8-0.

Under five minutes later, Heimes was standing in the end zone after a 1-yard plunge and the Wildcats were up 14-0.

Rosener found pay dirt again, this time from five yards away and after Heimes hit Feilmeier on a conversion pass, Hartington- Newcastle was well on its way to its second win of the season.

Heimes closed out scoring in the first frame with a 30-yard scamper past the goal line then hit Feilmeier on the 66-yard bomb to open the second 12-minute session and the score was 36-0 just 14 seconds into the second quarter.

Rosener scored from the Wildcat 38 and Heimes did the honors for the 2-point conversion before Wakefield finally answered on a 65-yard run, it was the only score the Trojans would manage on the evening.

Heimes hit Brayden Lammers for a 25-yard scoring play to end the first-half scoring and the teams went to the intermission with the Wildcats in control, 52-6.

Back-to-back scores by Rosener to open the second half, one 24 yards away and one from 60 yards out and the score was 68-6 with the clock running in the third quarter.

An Austin Sudbeck 2-yard blast up the middle ended the scoring on and got the teams to the final score.

Hartington-Newcastle is set to take on 1-1 Lutheran High Northeast in the Wildcats’ homecoming game Sept. 13 at the Hartington Community Athletic Complex.

The Eagles defeated Newman Grove/St. Edward Sept. 6, 43-20, after dropping their first game of the season in a shootout with Wisner-Pilger, 52-35 in their opener.
