A Closer L ook
It seems like old times again at Memorial Stadium.
The crowd was insanely loud for Saturday night’s non-conference match-up with Colorado.
They weren’t disappointed, either. It’s pretty early to be talking about conference and national championships, but we can say one thing after Saturday night’s drubbing of the Colorado Buffaloes.
It’s about time.
Finally, the Nebraska Cornhusker football team looked like the teams of old.
You know, the Tom Osborne and Frank Solich teams that always won at least nine games every season.
This year’s Cornhusker team looked like those of the past that dominated with good, old-fashioned Charlie McBride defensive intensity.
We also looked a bit like a Tom Osborne team — a team with an offense that lulled their foes asleep with running play after running play before launching one deep to surprise the other team.
While the game wasn’t exactly pretty in the second half, with all of the yellow flags littering the field, we did manage to stay in control of the contest until the final whistle.
It’s obvious the Buffaloes are not a Top 25 team, but it was still a good win. A win worth savoring. And, we will definitely savor this one.
After all, it had been eight years since the Huskers last started a season off with a 2-0 record. That, by the way, was the last time the Huskers were in the Top 25 for more than a week or two.
The win helped Nebraska return to the Top 25 for the first time in quite awhile, too. Now, the trick is staying there.
The last time Nebraska finished the season in the Top 25 was in 2012. But, I’m realistic. I’m not looking for a repeat of the 1995 unbeaten national championship season here. I’d settle for a repeat of 2012 where the Huskers finished 10-4 and rated 25th in the final AP poll.
But next year, next year could very well look like 1995 all over again.
