1914: Slate shingles on courthouse need to be replaced

July 22, 1914

HARTINGTON - The work of replacing the roof of the courthouse was started the first of the week.

The old roof, which was composed of slate shingles and which had been on the building since its erection, has been giving considerable trouble lately and a new roof was deemed necessary.

With every heavy rain more or less moisture came through and after every heavy wind, the yard was filled with broken slate.

The new roof is to be of fire proof asbestos shingles and when completed, will make for a very attractive appearance.

Henry Stuckenhoff was awarded the contract for putting on the new roof.

HARTINGTON —To meet the long-felt need of a club house, and at the same time to help improve the property of the Cedar County Fair, members of the Hartington Country club took action at their chicken supper last Sunday to remodel the present Floral Hall so it can still serve the purpose for which it was originally intended, and at the same time serve as a club house for the Country Club members.

The proposed changes which will be made in the Floral Hall include the moving of the building from its present location to a point about 500 feet east in the southeast corner of the fair grounds property, just east of the No. 8 tee of the golf course.

Then a full 50 x 60 basement will be placed under the building, and a porch 20 x 60 feet in dimension will be built on the north side of the Floral Hall.

It is proposed to install toilets, shower baths and lockers in the basement of the remodeled building, so it can be used for a club house by the members of the Country Club. There will be no change at all in the interior of the present Floral Hall. With such accommodations, the Country Club golfers will be saved many of the inconveniences which now take some of the joys out of their playing, and it will also be possible to entertain visiting players much better.

Whether or not a “nineteenth hole” will be installed in the new club house is another question which must be decided later.

At the chicken supper last Sunday, members of the Country Club pledged approximately $535 for the purpose of making the proposed change.

Another meeting of the club members to discuss the proposition is called for next Monday, however, and it is thought that the last obstacle in the way of making the change will be removed at that meeting.

The new location of the Floral Hall will make it an ideal place from which to view many of the activities of the fair.

It is located on the side of a hill so that it overlooks the entire fair grounds, and will make a fine place for a restroom for the women and children who attend the fair.

Other improvements are also being made by the Country Club at the fairgrounds.

A number of picnic tables have been placed there recently, which makes things much more handy for those who wish to hold picnics at this delightful spot.

The tables have seats attached to them, and they will undoubtedly see much use during this year’s Cedar County Fair.
