HARTINGTON — Eight years ago four local girls from different schools started out with two pieces of material and a needle and thread in their quest to learn to sew.
It was 4-H that brought these girls together during competition and life skills education that helped weave friendships to sustain them while learning about the world around them.
Thursday, Sarah Lammers, Devin Martinez, Kaci Groene and Chelise Lucht competed in the ‘Sewing for You’ category at the pre-fair Fashion Revue at the Trinity Lutheran Church basement in Hartington.
It’s a competition where the girls were tasked to make a complete outfit for a specific purpose and model it for the Style Review Show.
Judges chose Sarah Lammers Champion for a prom dress she plans to wear next year. It is lavender and plum color with tulle and satin in the skirt and full length dress. She also won overall Cedar County Fair Champion.
Lammers, Cedar Catholic student, plays the trombone in the band and likes sports. She also hopes some day to study creative writing.
“I like to sew, I learned so many things this year,” said Lammers, “4-H gives me the opportunity to do things like wood working and many life skills.”
Groene said all four of them met during Clover Kids one year and over time saw that they shared interests like sewing and music. She attends Laurel Concord Coleridge High School and this year she made a chiffon dress with pink sequins and a high/low hem.
“It was my second year to work with sequins, but my first year sewing with chiffon. It was very challenging,” she said.
