Joyce Karnes
LAUREL — Joyce Elaine (Delozier) Karnes, 84, Laurel, died July 9, 2024, at Hillcrest Care Center, Laurel, surrounded by her family.
Funeral Services were July 13 at the Faith Community Church, Laurel, with the Rev. Chris Clinchard officiating.
Burial was at the Laurel Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gary Ballentine, Dean Burbach, Tadd Delozier, Richard Delozier, Greg Meyer, David Meyer and Paul Meyer.
Visitation and a prayer service were Friday, at church. Visitation continued Saturday, one hour prior to services.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Laurel.
Joyce was born Sept. 27, 1939, to Paul James and Helen Anna (Jacobson) Delozier, Randolph. The middle of five siblings, she grew up in Randolph attending Randolph Public School, graduating from Randolph High School in 1957. She went on to attend Norfolk Junior College, receiving her associate of arts degree in elementary education. She then taught elementary grades in Sholes for two years and Randolph for one year. Joyce married her true love, Cleo Karnes, Dec. 30, 1961, at the United Methodist Church, Randolph. They lived for a few weeks in Laurel, before moving to their farm north of Laurel, where they would make their home for over 53 years. They had two children, daughter, Debra (Kelly) Konken and son Joel (Lisa) Karnes.
Joyce loved her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren very much. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed baking and gardening.
She was a member of the Laurel United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women’s Charity Circle, and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was member of the women’s Country Tuesday Club, helped to organize the library at Hillcrest Care Center and was chairman of the Residents Council there.
Joyce is survived by her children, Debra and Kelly Konken, and Joel and Lisa Karnes, all of Hartington; grandchildren, Kelsey (Konken) and Dane Dailey, Long Pine; Alison Karnes, Sarah Karnes and Craig Karnes, all of Hartington; great-grandchildren, Duke Daniel, Dallyn Elaine, Daityn Jo and Devyn Jean Dailey, all of Long Pine; her four siblings, Beverly Ballentine, Fullerton; Duane Delozier, Beatrice; Marlee (Cliff) Burbach, Randolph; and Kathi (Ronnie) Meyer Randolph; aunts, Norma Jacobson, Elkhorn, and Beverly Jacobson, Fremont; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo, July 9, 2015; her parents, Paul and Helen Delozier; parents-in-law, Joe and Mabel Karnes; niece, Linda Ballentine; nephews, James Delozier and Andrew Delozier; brother-in-law, Dale Ballentine; sister-in-law, Alyce Delozier; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Huetig Anderson, Doris (Robert) Morten, Joan (Jerry) Goodwin; and brother-in-law, Dean Karnes. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.
