ST. GEORGE, Utah - Verda M. Cardwell, 103, died June 10, 2024. A viewing was held June 20, at 10 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and Mass at 11 a.m., at the St. George Catholic Church, St. George.
She was born March 30,1921, in Crofton, to Joseph and Cecilia Schrempp Lange. She was the first of five children. Verda graduated from Crofton High School and from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She began a teaching career of many years, beginning in rural schools. Later, she taught in various city schools where she resided. Teaching was her esteemed career.
Verda married Lester Cardwell Aug. 6,1951, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee. They lived in San Francisco, Calif.; Lincoln; and Palo Alto, Calif. After Les retired, they moved to Fort Collins, Colo. Les preceded her in death June 28,1998, at the age of 81. Verda moved to St. George, Utah, in 2005. She attended St. George Catholic Church and thoroughly enjoyed her later years.
In earlier years, she sang in choir and other choral groups. She was a Eucharistic Minister and was instrumental in starting prayer chains and prayer groups including a Praise Ministry in Fort Collins. She was also a hospital and hospice volunteer for many years.
Verda is survived by her daughter, Anne (George) Hopfer; daughter, Cecilia Cardwell; and son, Gregory Cardwell.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Cecilia Lange; brothers, Quintin, Fr. Tim and Bud Lange; sister, Audrey Jonas; and her nephews: Paul Jonas and Brad Lange.
