BATTLE CREEK - Jesse Lundahl has become more than a thorn in the side of the Hartington Post 4 Senior American Legion baseball team this summer.

The Wakefield pitcher tossed another gem against Hartington in the opening round of the Ralph Bishop League Tournament here to turn away Post 4, 2-0 while throwing a seven-inning no hitter.

“He (Lundahl) was sure on again,” Hartington manager, Don Whitmire said. Hats off to Wakefield, we ran into a buzzsaw. That being said, I really like where our team is, we continue to have a lot of depth and arms on the mound.”

Lundahl issued no walks and struck out 13 as he faced the minimum number of batters in the contest.

Meanwhile, Post 4 starting pitcher, Sam Wiebelhaus had a good outing as well and combined with Koby Detlefsen, who pitched the final two innings, to scatter six hits over six innings with each giving up one run. but when the opposing pitcher throws a perfect game, it wasn’t enough.

Earlier in the week, Hartington bettered Oakland-Craig 11-6 in a game played in Hartington at Felber Park.

“I was proud of the way the kids competed,” Whitmire said. “Gavin Klug, who is a first-year Junior pitched very well against a strong Oakland-Craig team. And our bats were alive which helped.”

Hartington pounded out eight hits in the game and took advantage of five Oakland-Craig errors on the way to the 11-6 win.

Breiton Whitmire was 2-for-4 on the night and scored twice, Dan Puppe was 2-for-3 with a couple of RBI’s and Hunter Bensen finished 2-for-3 and scored twice with one RBI. Wes Heine also had a couple of RBI’s.

Koby Detlefsen and Dylan Taylor each drove in a run for Post 4.

Klug pitched five innings, spread out four runs on four hits; Tate Fischer pitched one inning and gave up a run on no hits and Wes Heine hurled an inning and allowed a run and a hit.

Whitmire and Bensen each doubled in the contest.

“These tough games will pay off,” Whitmire said. “I think we could make a run here in the post season.”

The Ralph Bishop League Tournament will continue this week and the Post 4 Seniors have one regular season game left on the schedule when they will host Ponca on July 9.
