City will sell old garbage truck, discusses hail damage

HARTINGTON – The Hartington City Council Monday agreed to sell its 2004 GMC garbage truck to the village of Wynot.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council Monday agreed to sell its 2004 GMC garbage truck to the village of Wynot.

The Council is asking $22,500 for the truck.

Council members agreed they will put the proceeds from that sale toward paying down the loan on the new garbage truck they recently purchased.

The Counil also approved an ordinance Monday to regulate underground propane storage containers and how close they can be located to houses and other structures The ordinance was approved after City Attorney Nicole Brandt advised the Council at its last meeting they should have the same restrictions on below ground storage tanks as they have on the above-ground tanks.

As far as the fire department is aware, there are currently only two underground tanks presently in use in Hartington, said Councilman Chris Bartling who also serves on the fire department.

The Council also recieved a $3,140 dividend check from its insurance carrier.

City Clerk Brittni Benscoter informed Council members the insurance company has already written the city a check for hail damage suffered to three city-owned buildings last May.

The $41,000 check will help defray costs of fixing or replacing roofs at the Hartington Country Club, shelter house and swimming pool bath house.

The insurance company estimated storm damage to the roof of the country club to be at $30,000, while dmaged to the swimming pool bath house was at $10,000 and damage to the shelter house roof was projected to be $10,000.

The Council agreed they wanted to get bids on all three roofs from local contractors before deciding what, if any, roofs to repair.

Councilman Roman Sudbeck said he’d like to see two bids for the clubhouse — one for regular shingles and one for a better, impact-resistant shingle.

The Council approved a sign permit for the former Stop N Go business, which is now NP Mart. Councilman Colin Kathol said the city is working to repair some issues at the park after hearing complaints about some of the playground equipment. He said a new steering wheel has been put on a tractor at the park, while other equipment was looked at, but has not been fixed, yet.

Kathol said improvements to the Felber Park baseball field are nearly complete.

Mayor Mark Becker noted he has received many positive comments about the ball park and Hartington’s other parks.
