PENDER - The Hartington Post 4 Senior American Legion baseball team got a gem on the mound from Koby Detlefsen which sent the team to a 1-0 win over Pender here at Dave Nitzschke Field June 10.

In fact, Detlefsen didn’t allow a single hit until the final inning where he surrendered two to begin the frame then got a ground out, a pop out and another ground out to close out the game.

“I just rely on my teammates to field the ball, I’m not a big strikeout kind of pitcher,” Detlefsen said.

“I just try to throw strikes and trust my teammates to make plays and they sure did tonight.”

Detlefsen struck out three Pender hitters and walked none in his seven innings of work.

“You always get strikes when Koby is on the mound,” Hartington manager, Don Whitmire said.

“He always around the plate.”

Hartington scored all of the runs Detlefsen would wind up needing in the first inning.

Breiton Whitmire opened the game with a sharp single past the shortstop. Bodie Hochstein lined a single into right field leaving runners on first and second.

Whitmire and Hochstein executed a double steal and Detlefsen helped his own cause with a single past the shortstop to score Whitmire.

Back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning and the scoring for the night.

Meanwhile Detlefsen had control on the mound. He retired Post 55 in order for the first three innings before hitting the first Pender batter in the fourth before sending the next three hitters back to the bench.

Detlefsen held Pender without another base runner until the seventh.

Post 4 did get a runner to third in the fifth when Whitmire got on with two outs on an error which left him at second base.

Whitmire stole third as Hochstein walked but a pop out ended the frame.

Over the weekend, Post 4 was one of the host sites of the Lewis and Clark Tournament where the team went 1-3 in the two-day event.

“We played some really good teams here and overall we played pretty good,” Whitmire said. “It will sure help us down the road. It will help us get better.”

Hartington lost to Harrisburg Maroon 11-7 to open the tournament on June 7 then defeated Sturgis, South Dakota 13-0.

On June 8, Post 4 lost to Sioux Falls West 8-4 and Tabor 6-5.

Prior to the tournament, Hartington won a pair of Ralph Bishop League games with Ponca at Felber Park on June 5, 8-0 and on the road at South Sioux City on June 3, 10-2.

Against Ponca, Hartington posted four runs in the first inning and three in the second to go up 7-0. Post 4 added a run in the fourth to get to the final score.

Whitmire, Dylan Taylor, Maverick Heine and Detlefsen scored in the first frame. Detlefsen had the key blow with a double chasing home two runners.

A Whitmire triple in the second sent Keyton Arens home and a Taylor single past the shortstop scored Whitmire. A Hunter Bensen single after a couple of walks plated Taylor to end the Post 4 scoring in the inning.

Cole Rosener scored in the third for Hartington’s eighth run.

A five-run seventh inning blew open a 5-2 Post 4 advantage against South Sioux City.

Three walks, a couple of hit batters and two singles provided the offense in the Hartington half of the seventh and sent Post 4 home with the win.

Hartington hosts Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells June 12, Post 4 travels to Wakefield June 13.
