Jack McCarthy of State Center, Iowa, formerly of Randolph, was awarded the Quilt of Valor by the Rhodes, Iowa American Legion Post 456 earlier this month. The quilts designed and quilted by the Central Iowa Quilting “Sew ciety” were presented to McCarthy and three other members of Post 456. McCarthy served in the U.S. Air Force and the Iowa Air National Guard from 1959 until his honorable discharge in 1965. He served at the Sioux City Air Base, hauling fuel for jet fighter planes, and operated a 24-hour on-call wrecker service.
