HARTINGTON — A $90,000 renovation project on two buildings which are to be Hartington’s new Senior Center has begun, according to Center volunteers and employees. Volunteers have begun removing walls, an old heating system and electrical wiring from the buildings which formerly housed the medical clinic and bakery on west Main Street. Bids for carpeting, paint, roofing and heating and cooling equipment currently are being accepted.
Karen Hochstein, a member of the Center staff, said the project is expected to take three to four months.
The seniors have applied for a grant from the Peter Kiewitt Foundation to help fund the project, according to Hochstein. Notification that some money will be forth-coming has been received, she said, however no amount was specified. The seniors hope to raise $40,000 through a fund drive, she said, with the balance to be borrowed.
“We’re hoping we won’t have to borrow a tremendous amount,” Mrs. Hochstein said.
Plans call for one use of the main floor of the two buildings and a portion of the basement in the old bakery building. A kitchen and dining room will occupy a large portion of the bakery building. The front portion of the dining room will include a stage area.
The second largest room on the main floor will be a women’s craft area, and several offices.
A lounge will be located in the old clinic building.
A large room in the basement will serve as a men’s activity area and pool room. Total space in the buildings will be 6,680 square feet, according to plans.
A new front also is being planned, and will feature a single entry. The architect for the building is Glen Mannes, Yankton, S.D.
