RANDOLPH – On a sunny afternoon last Saturday, Cary Kruse had expected an ordinary afternoon planting with a tractor near southeast Randolph, although just after 4p.m., his afternoon took on a strange twist just about one half mile from the Charlie and Ellen Bierschenk home.

He was literally knocked off his feet by a bolt of lighting which struck a blackbird about 75 feet away.

Although Kruse was not harmed, he felt his legs go out from under him and his hair stand on end with his head tingling.

He saw a flash of light and later examining the spot where it touched found several holes about one half inch wide with white scorch marks around the edges and the dead blackbird.

Following the event, Kruse continued planting.
