Cedar golfers end the season at Districts

HARTINGTON - Cedar Catholic ended its golf season here May 14 in the District C-2 Golf Tournament held at the Hartington Golf Course.

HARTINGTON - Cedar Catholic ended its golf season here May 14 in the District C-2 Golf Tournament held at the Hartington Golf Course.

Beautiful weather and ideal course conditions made for some incredible golf and it would take quite a performance to continue the season as the competition was stiff in the meet.

Ponca ran away with the team title, shooting a team-best score of 318, Norfolk Catholic was second at 331 and Pender came in third with a 345.

The Trojans wound up ninth after carding a 358.

“This was somewhat of a disappointment for us as we had our goals set higher than what we finished,” Cedar Catholic coach Rick Kuehn said. “But we are a young team and we need to learn from this and correct mistakes and get better.”

Sam Kuehn shot the low round of the day for the Trojans with an 87, Langston Christensen was next with an 89, Harrison Kuehn fired a 90, Mav Heine carded a 92 and Memphis Ulrich shot a 96.

Grant Sprakel was the champion of the day after shooting a blistering 69 to lead the Indians to the title.

Cole Lawless of Lutheran High Northeast was the runner-up with a 74, followed by Travis Emory of Pierce at 76.

“We knew we had one of the tougher districts in the state,” said Kuehn. “But we knew if we could keep our scores in the mid-eighties we would have a chance - unfortunately, it did not turn out that way.”

Despite ending the season, Kuehn took the opportunity to share a little love for the Hartington course and its management.

“I want to give a shout out to Jamy McCoy (course superintendent) and Keith Holm (clubhouse manager) for all of their hard work in getting the course and the clubhouse in tip top shape,” Kuehn said. “I also would like to thank Mike Johnson and Ken Kneifl for working with me throughout this whole season to get both teams on the course and good luck to the HNS golf team at state.”
