Wildcats have busy week on the golf course

HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle completed a bust week on the links with the Lewis & Clark Conference Golf Meet in Randolph on April 29.

The Wildcats ended up third in the meet after carding a 366. Ponca won the title with a 324, but Hartington-Newcastle was just five shots back of Creighton at 361 for second place.

“We played pretty darn solid golf in Randolph,” Hartington-Newcastle coach Mike Johnson said. “It was our lowest score of the season and the highest finish of the season.”

Riley Sudbeck set the tone for the Wildcats while carding an 83.

“Riley drove the ball well off the tee box and did a good job of getting it up and down when he missed the green on his approach shots,” Johnson said. “Barrett Bruning (96) shot a 45 on the front nine then got off to a slow start on the back nine, but he did a great job of rebounding and shooting a good score for us.”

Dayton Sudbeck came in with a 90, Bruning shot the 96, Carter Kelly fired a 97 and Austin Sudbeck shot a 114.

The Wildcats played in the Pierce Invitational at Battle Creek April 27 and came in 11th with a 417.

Bloomfield won the team title with a 364, Cedar Catholic was a shot back at 365.

Dayton Sudbeck had a great day, placing third individually after carding an 86.

“Dayton struck the ball very well all day,” Johnson said. “He took his time and visualized his shots, he did a great job.”

Kelly fired a 101, Bruning was next at 109 and Austin Sudbeck came in with a 121.

Ponca also won the Cedar Catholic Invitational by 13 strokes over O’Neill. 337-350. The Trojans were third and Hartington-Newcastle ended up ninth after putting up a team total of 376.

Dayton Sudbeck led the way with an 89, Riley Sudbeck shot a 92, Kelly fired a 95, Bruning carded a 100 and Austin Sudbeck shot a 118.

“At that time that was our lowest total of the season,” Johnson said. “Overall we struck the ball very well from tee to green but we didn’t putt the ball real well. We had a lot of three putts and even a couple of four putts.”

The Wildcats were set to travel to Randolph for a meet on May 7 before hosting the D-3 District Meet on May 13.

“We’ve got some work to do to get in the top three at the district meet,” Johnson said. “We’ll keep working at it.”
