Relay teams lead Cedar at Battle Creek meet

BATTLE CREEK – The Cedar Catholic Trojan and Lady Trojan track teams competed in the B-Club Invitational Track and Field Meet in Battle Creek on May 2 and both teams ended up fifth in the team standings.

BATTLE CREEK — The Cedar Catholic Trojan and Lady Trojan track teams competed in the B-Club Invitational Track and Field Meet in Battle Creek on May 2 and both teams ended up fifth in the team standings.

The Lady Trojans scored 80 points grab the fifth spot, Battle Creek won the girls’ division of the meet with 149 points, Wayne was second with 97, West Holt was third with 85 and Scotus Central Catholic was a point behind at 84 followed by Cedar Catholic.

Battle Creek also won the boys’ portion of the meet with 182 points, followed by Scotus with 109, West Holt with 88.33, Wayne with 72 and the Trojans with 66.

“We moved some kids around and used the meet as a tune up for districts,” Cedar Catholic coach, Blair Kalin said. “The last thing we wanted was to wear anyone out or get someone hurt before the district meet.”

For the Trojans, Braeden Reifenrath continued his surge to the leaders in the sprints with a third-place showing in 200 and a fourth in the 100 as well as being involved in some successful Cedar Catholic relay squads.

“Braeden has come a long ways this year and has been consistently up there in the sprints,” Kalin said.

Matthew Loecker, Nolan Becker and Alex Elks had a good day in the middle and long distances.

In fact, Loecker, Becker and Kighter Wortmann finished third, fourth and fifth respectively in the 800-meters.

Elks was fifth in the 1,600 and Easton Hochstein was sixth in 110-meter high hurdles.

Aaron Wortmann ended up second in the high jump with a best of 5-feet-6-inches, the same height teammate, Hunter Bensen cleared, but Bensen had a couple of misses below 5-06 and ended up fourth.

Kalin was also pleased with the progress made by three sophomores in the weight throws.

Graham Potts used a career-best hurl in the discus of 146-08 to place second, Jared Rutar was fifth and Sam Wiebelhaus brought home a medal in sixth.

The Cedar Catholic relays were a vital part of the scoring in this meet. The 4X800 team of Alex Elks, Kighter Wortmann, Hunter Kuchta and Adam Elks placed second while the 4X400 quartet of Breiton Whitmire, Kuchta, Becker and Loecker placed third.

The 4X100 squad of Whitmire, Alex Kuehn, Booker Hochstein and Reifenrath was fourth and the Trojan 800-meter sprint medley team consisting of Brady Hochstein, Michael Schroeder, Haiden Thoene and Aaron Wortmann placed fifth.

The Lady Trojans also rested some of their top performers in certain areas, but considering the team consists of just 11 Lady Trojans, 80 points scored is quite impressive.

The obvious leader in this meet was Anisten Wortmann who is running and jumping herself back into shape after missing some time with an arm injury.

“I wouldn’t say she’s back to 100 percent,” Kalin said. “But she’s definitely getting better. I’ve been very happy with all of the girls, they are a group of hard-working kids.” Wortmann won the 100 and 200 and joined Brynn Bernecker, Kally Becker and Lauren Bernecker to win the

4X400 relay - and Wortmann was third in the long jump.

Claire Rolfes won the 1,600 in 5:47.41 with teammate Ava Noecker placing sixth in the event.

The Lady Trojan 4X800 team of Brynn Bernecker, Claire Rolfes, Becker and Lauren Bernecker also won a gold medal and the 800 sprint medley squad of Savannah Pick, Jocelyn Bottolfsen, Noecker and Isabel Rolfes was fourth.

Isabel Rolfes also placed sixth in the 800. Lexi Eickhoff was second in the shot with a best of 35--

10.25 with teammate, Addison Walter finishing fourth. Eickhoff was third in the discus with a toss of 112-09.

Both teams will be hosting the C-4 District Meet on May 9 at the Hartington Community Athletic Complex.
