LAUREL - Mother Nature delayed the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational by a couple of days but the meet went on without a hitch, April 18 here at Haskell Field.

The Bears finished the meet in a tie for fourth in the team standings while the Lady Bears finished fifth.

Wisner-Pilger won the girls’ division of the meet with 113 points, just five points ahead of Tri County Northeast. Ponca was third with 105 and Pender was fourth with 95. The Lady Bears posted 62 team points.

Creighton won the boys’ section of the invite with 105, Ponca had 100, Pender was third with 99 and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge was tied with Wisner-Pilger with 74.

Tali Erwin led the Lady Bears, scoring 28 of her team’s points with wins in the high jump and 100-meter hurdles and a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles.

“It’s really cool to help our team and especially here at home,” Erwin said.

The three-sport star spoke of her love for track. “I’ve always liked track, but I like whatever sport I am playing,” she said. “But I think I like track best because I’ve always been pretty good at the events I compete in.”

She looks at the invitationals throughout the season as a stepping stone to her ultimate goal.

“I want to keep improving each day and each meet and I’m looking at getting to state,” she said. “My goal would be to get to state in every event I do, that’s what I’m working towards.”

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s 3,200-meter relay team of Justice Olson, Abbie Brummels, Faith Galvin and Tyler Recob placed second and Galvin and Olson were third and fourth respectively in the individual 3,200-meter run.

Carlie Kvols added to the Lady Bears team total with a fourth-place showing in the 400, Brynlee Stanley was fifth in the long jump and Laney Folkers was fifth in the triple jump.

Folkers and Karli Ferris just missed in the long jump, getting seventh and eighth and Ferris was seventh in the triple jump.

Preston Rose paced the Bears with a first in the 400, circling the track in 53.45 seconds to earn a gold and he placed second in the 200.

Carter Kvols and Tyler Olson were second in the 800 and 3,200 respectively while Olson also grabbed a third-place medal in the 1,600.

Gibson Roberts was third in the 200 behind Rose, placed fourth in the 100-meters and teamed with Rose, Kvols and Hunter Benson to place third in the 1,600-meter relay.

The 400 relay team of Tyler Boysen, Rose, Benson and Kvols placed third and the 3,200 quartet of Noah Larson, Walker Stone, Kayton Hall and Christian Staples placed fourth.

Stone was fourth in the shot with a toss of 38-feet-4.5-inches and Hall used a heave of 112-01 to placed fourth in the discus.

Both teams were set to head to Creighton on April 23 and qualifying athletes will compete in the Norfolk Classic.
