Cedar track teams compete at Tom Martin Invitational

PIERCE - The Cedar Catholic Trojan and Lady Trojan track teams competed in the Tom Martin Memorial/Wausa Invitational here on April 18.

The Lady Trojans placed fourth in the team race while the Trojans ended up ninth in the boys’ meet.

Pierce won the girls’ team title with 93 points, Norfolk Catholic was second just one point behind the Lady Bluejays, Crofton was third with 83 and Cedar Catholic posted 79 points to wind up fourth. Stanton was fifth with 51.

Norfolk Catholic won the boys’ title with 117 points, Pierce was second with 99 easily outdistancing third-place, Stanton which scored 54.

The Trojans finished with a season-low 25 points.

The Lady Trojans relied on Annisten Wortmann, Lauren Bernecker, Kally Becker and Claire Rolfes for points on the track and earned points from Lexi Eckhoff in the throws to end up at 79.

Wortmann, who was on the track again after suffering an injury earlier in the season and got right back into the swing of things. She used a 26.39 second performance to win the 200 and ended up fifth in the 400.

Bernecker was third in the 400 led off the Cedar Catholic 3,200-meter relay which won that event in 10:19.71.

Rolfes placed second in the 1,600 and also ran a leg in the winning 3,200 squad.

Becker won the open 800 and was the anchor leg of the 3,200 quartet, Brynn Bernecker was the fourth member of the team.

Eickhoff won the shot with a best of 38feet-7 inches and placed fourth in the discus with a heave of 112-06.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Becker, the Bernecker sisters and Rolfes placed second.

The Trojans are a bit hamstrung, literally, as sprinter and long jumper, Alex Kuehn is nursing a hamstring injury.

He powered through it to place second in the long jump but didn’t compete in any running events.

The Trojan 3,200 relay team of Matthew Loecker, Alex Elks, Kighter Wortmann and Nolan Becker placed second with a time of 8:52.96 and the 1.600 squad of Hunter Kuchta, Becker, Loecker and Wortmann placed fifth.

Loecker was fourth in the 800, Becker was sixth in the race.

Alex Elks was fifth in the 1,600 and Adam Elks was sixth in the 3,200.

Both teams will have competitors in the Norfolk Classic Track and Field Meet April 24 before heading to the Mid-State Conference Meet at Boone Central in Albion April 27.
