HOMER — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears and Lady Bears traveled a little short-handed to Homer for the Homer Track and Field Invitational on April 11 at Ivan Krumwiede Field.
“We had less than half the team,” LCC head coach Shannon Benson said. “We had kids in SkillsUSA and State FBLA, so we were a little shorthanded for sure.”
Although short on athletes, the Bears and Lady Bears at the meet performed quite well.
“We came home with a heavy bag of medals,” Benson said, “including quite a few first-place medals.”
The Bears were paced by Preston Rose, who won the 200 in 24.44 seconds and doubled up on the 400 in 53.35, seven full seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Rose teamed up with Carter Kvols, Hunter Benson and Tyler Boysen to win the 1,600-meter relay and the 400-meter relay quartet of the same group placed sixth in that race.
Kvols also circled the track twice in 2:11.61 on his own and placed first in the 800 meters.
Tali Erwin was the main weapon for the Lady Bears, winning the high jump and placing third in the 300 hurdles.
She grouped up with Hattie McCorkindale, Carlie Kvols and Abbie Brummels to place fourth in the
800 sprint medley relay. The sprint medley consists of legs of 100 meters twice, 200 meters and a
400-meter anchor leg.
Kvols got fourth in the 400 and Toni Thompson got fourth in the shot put.
“The team ran, jumped and threw well, and we had some season’s bests, which is always good to see,” Benson said. “The season is just getting started and we hope to keep improving every day in practice so we can see our results at meets. I was proud of the team; we had some kids running some different events and helping out on relays with the low numbers.”
LCC was expected to be at full strength when it hosts its own invitational on April 18, with a noon start time, and will compete at the Creighton Invitational on April 23.
