HARTINGTON — The Hartington- Newcastle boys’ and girls’ track teams competed at the Trojan Invitational April 9 at the Hartington Community Complex, with the Wildcats claiming the runner-up hardware and the Lady Wildcats coming in fourth place.
“It was an impressive day for us,” Wildcats coach Dylan Behnk said. “We’re starting to understand how good we can possibly be by the end of the season. The kids are seemingly continuing to buy in more and more and it has really been fun to watch and coach.”
The Wildcats trailed only Cedar Catholic in the team scoring 124-104 points; Creighton was third with 81 and Wausa was fourth with 74.
The Lady Wildcats put up 59 points in the girls’ field with Wausa taking the team title with 127. Cedar Catholic was second with 119 and Crofton was third with 109.
It was the day of the “Coles” on the track. Cole Rosener and Cole Heimes had a hand in 48 points in the boys’ standings.
Rosener won the 200 in 23.84 seconds, placed second in the 400 and third in the 100, and ran a leg on Hartington-Newcastle’s thirdplace 400-meter relay squad along with Kale Korth, Keatyn Arens and Will Feilmeier.
Heimes placed second in the 300 hurdles, third in the triple jump and fourth in the pole vault.
Korth scored plenty of points as well with second-place finishes in the 110-meter high hurdles and triple jump and a fourth-place showing in the 300 hurdles to go along with his leg in the 400 relay.
The Wildcats’ 3,200 relay consisting of Arens, Landon McIntosh, Gabriel Reyes and Jason Heimes placed third and the 1,600 team of Brayden Lammers, Ty Opfer, Jason Heimes and Aidan Anderson came in fifth.
Lammers had a third in the high jump and a sixth in the triple jump while Mason Krause took fifth in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the long jump. Isaac Santiago was fifth in the 1,600.
The Lady Wildcats parlayed 14 points in the relays with several individual performances to arrive at 59 points.
The 3,200-meter relay team of Olivia Grutsch, Ell Haug, Emily Climer and Karissa Bruning placed third; the 1,600 squad of Grutsch, Climer, Haug and Zoey Gratzfeld came in fourth; and the 400-meter team consisting of Madelyn Rosener, Abi Rice, Hazel Hochstein and Mani Lange also came in fourth.
“We really ‘stepped up’ in the Trojan Invite,” Lady Wildcats coach Mandy Hochstein said. “I’m excited to have a group of girls willing to participate in events they may not necessarily want to do, but will if asked.”
Hazel Hochstein had a busy and successful day, placing third in the 300 hurdles, fourth in the pole vault and fifth in the high jump.
Rice added a third-place showing in the 100 to her relay performance, Lange added a third in the pole vault and fifth in the 100 hurdles, and Gratzfeld placed fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the 100 hurdles.
Grutsch tacked on sixth-place finishes in both of the throwing events to her relay performances and Jade Ford placed third and fifth in the triple jump and long jump, respectively. Lauren Howell was fourth in the shot put.
The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will travel to Pierce for the Tom Martin Invitational on April 18.
