Trojan golfers finish fourth in Laurel

LAUREL — The Cedar Catholic golf team traveled to Laurel and took fourth-place in the team standings here at Cedarview Country Club, April 11 after shooting a 378 over 18-holes in the tournament.

Tekamah-Herman won the team title after carding a 347, Ponca was second with a 351 while Homer placed third with a 369.

“The weather was a bit uncooperative with some high winds,” Trojan coach Rick Kuehn said. “The scores were about what I expected, on the higher end of things.”

Although Kuehn felt the tournament was a good thing for his team, the team surprised him a touch and gave the long-time coach confidence that things are headed in the right direction.

“We all played in the same wind, but we’re learning a bit as we go,” Kuehn said. “I told the boys for the most of them, this was their first 18-hole meet, they were upset about the way they played and now they know what they need to work on. That was nice to hear. If we keep working and learning from our mistakes, we will definitely get better.”

Ponca’s Landon Uthof took medalist honors with an 82. Brody Rogers from Tekamah-Hermans was second with and 84 and Mauric Ford-Davis from Homer won a scorecard playoff with Thomas Bratiff of Tekamah-Herman for third after both fired an 85.

Mav Heine had the round of his high school life, getting in the top five, placing fifth after shooting an 86.

“I was happy with Mav and what he shot,” Kuehn said. “Now we need to get everyone involved and see everyone get better.”

The Trojans had Heine in fifth with the 86 and the rest of the team who’s score figured into the team total shot under 100.

Langston Christensen ended up 30th after shooting a 96 then Sam Kuehn and Harrison Kuehn came in at 97 and 99.

“I got a little lazy on the back nine and needed to take care of what I was doing,” Sam Kuehn said. “The wind today was a little brutal, it didn’t help at all, but I should have played better, I guess. I hit the ball pretty well and putted okay, we’ll get better.”

Cedar Catholic is young by experience, but Rick Kuehn likes what he is seeing in the early stages of the season.

“They all know what they need to work on to improve and that is good to hear,” the coach said. “If we keep working and learn from our mistakes, we will definitely get better.”

The Trojans were set to go to Pierce for a meet on April 16 before heading to Rolling Hills Golf Course for an invitational April 20.

Cedar Catholic will continue on the road with a meet hosted by Plainview, April 22 then host its own invitational on April 23.

Cedar Catholic is young by experience, but Rick Kuehn likes what he is seeing in the early stages of the season.

“We don’t have a kid that can shoot par over 18 holes,” Rick Kuehn said. “We have to have golfers one through five shoot in the low 40’s for us to achieve our goals.”
