Short-handed HNS teams hit the track

HARTINGTON – It took a couple of extra days to happen, but Hartington-Newcastle finally hosted its own track meet on April 4 after Mother Nature caused it to be postponed on April 2.

HARTINGTON — It took a couple of extra days to happen, but Hartington-Newcastle finally hosted its own track meet on April 4 after Mother Nature caused it to be postponed on April 2.

Some of the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats were unable to compete due to State FFA happening at the same time, but the ones who competed did well.

“We were missing a few of our athletes due to State FFA, but we were very pleased with our performances this early in the season,” Lady Wildcats coach Mandy Hochstein said. “Many of our athletes had early season personal records and I’m excited to see the outcomes as we move closer to our conference and District meets.”

Pender won the girls’ title in the meet with 94 points with Cedar Catholic second with 87. The Lady Wildcats finished seventh with 36 team points.

Ponca won the boys’ meet with 133 points, again; Cedar Catholic was second with 123. Hartington-Newcastle finished fourth in the team standings with 52 points.

Mani Lange had a very busy and successful day for the Lady Wildcats.

Lange was second in the 100-meter hurdles, third in the pole vault and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles.

To put a cap on her outing, she joined Abi Rice, Hazel Hochstein and Madelyn Rosener to place second in the 400-meter relay.

Hochstein would finish second in the pole vault and just out of the medals in seventh in the high jump.

Teammates Olivia Grutsch in the discus and Lauren Howell in the shot put also finished one spot short of points, placing seventh each.

Rice would score points with a fifth-place showing in the 100 meters and Carmen Buschkamp grabbed a couple of medals with a fifthplace finish in the 3,200 and a sixth in the 1,600.

The Wildcats used great performances from Brayden Lammers, Kale Korth and Cole Rosener to finish the meet fourth in the team race.

Lammers was second in the long jump and third in the triple jump and just missed a medal in the 800 meters.

“I wanted to set PRs (personal records) in everything today and I pretty much did that,” Lammers said. “I want to get up to 6-2 or 6-4 in the high jump and just keep improving in all of my events.”

Korth placed second in the pole vault, second in the 110-meter high hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.

Rosener was fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 200 and joined Korth, Landon McIntosh and Keatyn Arens to place fourth in the 400-meter relay.

Lincoln Grutsch was fifth in the shot put. McIntosh, Lammers, Arens and Rosener placed fourth in the 1,600-meter relay.

“I thought we had a fantastic showing in the meet,” Wildcats coach Dylan Behnk said. “There was a lot to be proud of that day.”

Several Wildcats set personal records in the meet, including all of the medalists listed above and Isaac Santiago in the 1,600 and Ty Opfer in the 400 and the high jump.

Hartington-Newcastle was set to hit the track in April 9 at the Cedar Catholic Invitational before hosting another home meet on April 15.

The teams will run in the Tom Martin Invitational at Pierce on April 18.
