Area athletes compete at Dan Lennon indoor track meet

VERMILLION - Forty-Five teams from three states converged at the Dakota Dome on March 19 for the annual Dan Lennon Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet.

Mani Lange brought home the first-place plaque in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 8-feet-6 inches. Teammate, Hazel Hochstein placed fourth with a best of 7-0-feet.

Jade Ford took third in the triple jump and 16th in the long jump. Carmen Buschkamp ended up 15th in the 3,200.

“We had many personal records in the meet,” Lady Wildcats coach Mandy Hochstein said. “We brought home three plaques and it was a really good first meet.”

The Wildcats were paced by Cole Heimes who placed fifth in the pole vault with a best of 10-feet even and a seventh in the long jump.

Isaac Santiago used a personal best in the 3,200 to place 17th.

Although practice time has been limited, Cedar Catholic head coach, Blair Kalin was happy with the way his teams performed.

“I really liked how we competed,” Kalin said. “This was a very tough meet with a lot of good athletes, placing there was really tough.”

Two Cedar Catholic athletes brought home first-place plaques from the meet and both were from the same event.

Lauren Bernecker won the 400 in the girls division with a time of 1:01.19 to earn her plaque and Alex Kuehn won the same event in the boys division with a time of 51.85 seconds.

“Lauren’s time is really good for an early spring time indoors,” Kalin said. “Alex showed he could have a really great season this spring.”

The Trojans also earned a sixth-place showing in the 4X400 relay as Breiton Whitmire, Matthew Loecker, Nolan Becker and Hunter Kuchta covered the distance in 3:54.12.

The 1,600 sprint medley team of Whitmire, Mason Baller, Becker and Loecker placed ninth. The sprint medley consisted of two 200 -meter legs, a 400-meter leg and an 800-meter leg.
