HARTINGTON —Hartington-Newcastle won a thriller in overtime over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge at the HNS gymnasium Monday in Hartington.

The teams were tied 45-45 after a furious Bear comeback in the fourth quarter knotted the score, but the Wildcats persevered in overtime by outscoring LCC 7-5 to take the game.

Full statistics were not available at press time and a full accounting of the basketball game will be in next week’s Cedar County News.

The Wildcats played wire-to-wire with Wynot (see story above) earlier in the week and dropped a regular-season contest to Wausa back on Feb. 6 48-36 in a game played in Wausa.

In the loss to the Vikings, the Wildcats trailed from the beginning and couldn’t get out of the hole they dug in the opening half.

Wausa led 9-4 after the first quarter and increased the advantage to 27-13 at the intermission.

Hartington-Newcastle nibbled at the lead in the second half, but the Vikings had done the damage in the first 16 minutes of the contest.

Riley Sudbeck led a fairly balanced Wildcat scoring attack with nine points. Cole Rosener and Cole Heimes each added eight points, while Austin Sudbeck chipped in six.

Hartington-Newcastle will turn around and play Wynot again in the opening round of the D2-5 SubDistrict Tournament to be played in Walthill Feb. 20 and Feb. 22.

The Wildcats and Blue Devils tip off at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 after the Bluejays take on Lyons-Decatur at 6 p.m.

The winners on Feb. 20 will play each other for the SubDistrict title at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 back in Walthill.
