HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans lost in the opening round of the Mid-State Conference Tournament to No. 2-seeded Guardian Angels Central Catholic 59-29 to land in the consolation bracket the rest of the way.
The Lady Trojans used an overtime win over Boone Central, 67-65, to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket against Norfolk Catholic Feb. 3 in an early morning basketball contest that went to the Lady Knights, 57-47.
“We’re playing really hot and cold right now; it’s really hard to judge which team will show up,” Cedar Catholic coach Craig Wortmann said. “We need to just focus on the areas we need to improve and the areas we are good at and go from there.”
Cedar Catholic grabbed a 2724 lead over the Lady Knights at halftime of the fifth-place game.
They played to a stalemate in the third frame, 16-16, but the wheels fell off of the Lady Trojans’ wagon in the fourth period as Norfolk Catholic ran away with the 10-point win.
“Katy (Jones) went down late in the third or early in the fourth and that just took the wind out of our sails,” Wortmann said. “We seem to have difficulty from time to time overcoming adversity.”
In the consolation semifinals, the Lady Trojans and Lady Cardinals hooked up for a dandy game on Feb. 1 that was played at the Monsignor Werner Activity Center in the final game of the night.
Cedar Catholic sprinted out to a big lead in the first eight minutes and took a 23-11 advantage into the second quarter.
The Lady Trojans added a bucket to the lead prior to the intermission before Boone Central erupted for 25 points in the third quarter to cut the lead down to 47-44 heading into the last frame.
The teams were deadlocked at the end of regulation at 61-61 and the Lady Trojans scored six points in the extra session to sneak away with the win.
Addison Walter had a monster game as she scorched the nets for 28 points in the contest. Katelyn Arens tacked on nine and Anisten Wortmann tossed in eight.
The Lady Trojans fell behind the Lady Bluejays in the opening round, trailing 22-6 heading into the second quarter.
The teams played even to the halftime break, but a lethargic third frame ended any upset hopes for Cedar Catholic.
Walter led the team with nine points.
“We’ve got a couple of games left to work on some things before the Sub-District,” Wortmann said.
Cedar Catholic was set to host Elkhorn Valley on Feb. 6 before welcoming Battle Creek to Hartington on Feb. 8.
The Lady Trojans will finish the regular season with a game against Pierce on the road on Feb. 9.
The C2-8 Sub-District Tournament is slated for Feb. 13 and Feb. 15.
Crofton looks like the likely host of the tournament as the top seed with Hartington-Newcastle and Ponca joining the Lady Trojans and Lady Warriors.
