1944: Hartington Herald suspends publication due to the war

Jan. 27, 1944

Jan. 27, 1944

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Herald announced that effective this week, they were suspending publication for the duration of the war.

The front page on the Herald said: The Herald suspends publication with this issue until close of the war or until such as those connected with the ownership return from the armed forces.

As soon as publication is resumed, all subscriptions will be credited duly so that those subscribers paid in advance will be protected.

Poor health of two of the publishers and absence due to service in the armed forces of a third member of the team, as well as lack of sufficient help necessitates this move.

We take this opportunity to express our appreciation to our many loyal readers and patrons who have aided us so much in the past growth of the Herald.

We wish to express our greatest appreciation to Mrs. Florence Felber, who has been associated with the Herald for several years and who has been in active management in recent months. Her loyalty has been superb. When victory comes, the Herald will be back again, bigger and better than ever.

— Dudley Stone for the Publishers
