HARTINGTON - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans split a pair of Mid-State Conference home games over the past week defeating Wayne 61-38 on Jan. 19 and dropping a game to Guardian Angels Central Catholic 51-33 on Jan. 20.

Against the 14-1 Lady Bluejays, a chilly start to the afternoon put the Lady Trojans in a bit of a hole as they trailed 16-8 in the first eight minutes.

Cedar Catholic stayed with Guardian Angels through the second quarter as the teams went to the halftime break with with the Lady Bluejays up 26-18, but a 26-15 second half spelled doom for the Lady Trojans, 52-33.

The Lady Trojans were 10-for-32 from the field overall and just 2-of-14 from beyond the 3-point line.

Addison Walter paced Cedar Catholic with 10 points, Katelyn Arens and Anisten Wortmann tacked on seven points apiece and Katy Jones added four.

In the game with the Lady Blue Devils, Cedar Catholic went up 25-13 after a Lauren Bernecker offensive rebound and put back with just under three minutes left before the intermission.

After a Wayne three, Anisten Wortmann scored on a fast break then Katy Jones spotted Grace Wortmann along the baseline for two to make it 29-16 with 1:08 left before the break.

The first half ended with Cedar Catholic in front, 29-18.

The Lady Trojans were up 38-23 when Anisten Wortmann canned a pair of foul shots with 3:19 left in the third frame, then Arens toed the line 34 seconds later and converted both free throws to make it 44-23.

Wortmann stole the ball and hit Bernecker for a lay up and the teams entered the fourth period with the Lady Trojans in the lead, 44-27.

Cedar Catholic outscored Wayne 17-12 in the final eight minutes to claim its seventh win of the season.

“I wasn’t sure how we would respond after missing so many practices and so many games,” Cedar Catholic coach Craig Wortmann said. “We have been working on pushing the tempo in the practices we did get in and I thought we pushed the ball when it presented itself here tonight.”

The Lady Trojans were set to take on Ponca Jan. 23 in Ponca before a makeup game with Wynot at home, Jan. 26. The Mid-State Conference Tournament gets underway Jan. 27 and runs through Feb. 3.

“I like where we’re at right now,” Wortmann said. “Obviously we need to keep getting better, but we are making progress in the right direction.”
