1924: Hartington basketball team endures physical game at Laurel

HARTINGTON — Both Hartington basketball teams journeyed to Laurel Wednesday night and returned with one victory.

The boys defeated Laurel by a score of 21-9 while the girls lost 14-9. Despite the loss, in the second half, the local girls showed the Laurel girls how to play basketball and held them to no points, while getting five of their own.

The boys game was in Hartington’s favor all the way. On account of the smallness of the floor, the game, in the second half, almost became a football game with Laurel trying to stop the local boys by force, rather than by playing straight basketball.

Axel Johnson was the first victim when on being tripped, he fell on his back and head and was unconscious for several minutes.

Hartington High School opened the basketball season this week when it defeated Coleridge on the City Hall floor.

COLERIDGE — A Ford touring car was completely wrecked this past Saturday. Dwight Romer was driving the car just south of his home when suddenly the lights went out on it. The car started heading for the ditch and flipped over. But Romer had jumped out before it did so he escaped uninjured.
