Bears split Ponca, Plainview games

LAUREL – The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys basketball team split two games over the past week with a 57-44 loss to Ponca for LCC’s first loss of the season and a 51-45 win over Plainview in overtime.

LAUREL – The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys basketball team split two games over the past week with a 57-44 loss to Ponca for LCC’s first loss of the season and a 51-45 win over Plainview in overtime.

It took an extra session, but Laurel-Concord-Coleridge responded to outscore the Pirates 9-3 in the extra period to outlast Plainview and win its fifth game of the season.

The Pirates went up by eight in the first quarter and held the advantage the entire game until the Bears eventually tied it up in the final eight minutes of regulation. The score was knotted at 42-42 at the final buzzer before Laurel-Concord-Coleridge took control.

Gibson Roberts paced the Bears offense with 17 points in the contest; Tyler Olson added 10.

Kolby Hansen contributed nine points, Kayton Hall had eight and Carter Kvols tossed in five. Hansen led LCC with 10 rebounds, narrowly missing a doubledouble. Olson just missed a double-double as well, grabbing nine boards. Kvols cornered five missed shots; Roberts and Hall each had four rebounds.

Against the Indians, the Bears staked a 14-11 lead at the end of the first frame, but Ponca responded with 15 points in the second period to seven for the Bears to send the teams to the intermission with the Indians in front, 26-21.

Ponca added eight points to the lead in the third quarter and the teams played even through the final stanza.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had three players in double figures, paced by Roberts with 13. Bradyn Urwiler tacked on a dozen and Olson finished with 10.

Kvols grabbed six rebounds, Roberts had four and Hansen brought down three.

The Bears were set to take on 6-1 Bloomfield in their final game before the Christmas break on Dec. 19 in Laurel.

After the moratorium, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge is scheduled to play in the Wayne Holiday Tournament from Dec. 28-30.

Wayne, Pierce, Cedar Catholic, Pender, Plattsmouth, South Sioux City and Winnebago will join the Bears in the tournament.
