2013: Hartington High claims third straight State One Act title

NORFOLK — The Hartington Public One-Act crew claimed a third straight State championship with their performance of the “The Perils of Lulu” at competition Thursday.

Last year, the HPS group won the state title with their hilarious performance of “Ug: The Caveman Musical.”

For One-Act Coach A.J. Johnson, the win is a real source of pride for the school.

But Johnson said he has the most fun just watching the students improve throughout the year.

“The fun part this year was watching kids who had just been in the chorus and ensemble the last two years step into main character roles and seeing them grow as the season went along,” Johnson said.

Knowing they had tough competition, the students said each of the practices prior to State competition were critical for them.

The coaches emphasized the need for three elements at all times: energy, intensity, and finally, focus.

Johnson said even if the students made a mistake, they could overcome it if they kept up their energy and intensity at all times.

At the State competition, Junior Kolby Jueden was most impressed by how well everyone worked together.

“With all the costume changes, it takes a lot of people helping out to make sure it gets done and for people to be in their spots and on cue,” he said. “We did a good job of that.”

Junior Tanner Fischer agreed with Jueden about the teamwork.

“It takes chemistry to know what the other actors are doing and picking up other people’s cues,” he said. “We came together well.”

HARTINGTON — The deadline for hooking up to the Brooky Bottom Drinking Water Service from the Lewis and Clark NRD/Cedar Knox Rural Water Project is looming.

The water service to the Brooky Bottom area of Cedar County was discussed last summer and public meetings held to review the prospects.
