Strong defensive effort leads GACC past Wynot

WYNOT – The Wynot Lady Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday night at the hands of the Guardian Angels Central Catholic Lady Blue Jays. Wynot was held to single-digit scoring in every quarter as they struggled against the physical play of the Lady Jays.

WYNOT — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday night at the hands of the Guardian Angels Central Catholic Lady Blue Jays. Wynot was held to single-digit scoring in every quarter as they struggled against the physical play of the Lady Jays.

GACC got a big game from their center Kelsy Steffen who had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jacelynn Skoda also hit double figures with 11 points for the visitors.

Wynot was led by their sophomore forward Kenna Oligmueller who had a good second half to finish with seven points and Kinslee Heimes helped with her four points.

Guardian Angels took control from the onset of the game. Kelsy Steffen connected for nine quick points as the Lady Jays raced to a 13-4 first period lead. Kinslee Heimes had all four points for the Lady Blue Devils.

Myrah Sudbeck and Kayla Pinkelman each connected from the field for Wynot in the second quarter. Kelsy Steffen continued to have the hot hand for the Lady Jays as she connected for another seven points in the quarter. Charlie Dinslage and Jacelyn Skada each contributed a basket as GACC had pushed their lead to 24-8 at the halftime break.

It was more of the same in the third quarter. Kenna Oligmueller worked the high post area for a pair of baskets for Wynot but Guardian Angels’ dominated the offensive glass to build on their lead with a 14-6 run.

Six points by Jacelynn Skada and a pair of baskets by Adyson Luebbert pushed the visitors’ lead to 38-14 going into the final quarter of play.

In the final quarter, Wynot got a trey by Oligmueller and some free throws, but the Guardian Angels continued to roll finishing the game on a 17-6 run. Abigail Toline and Isabel Hass each hit three-pointers to fuel the run as GACC rolled to the 55-20 win.
