Wynot, LCC battle at Wakefield Triangular

WAKEFIELD – The Wynot Lady Blue Devils and the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears met in the second match of a volleyball triangular played in Wakefield on Sept. 21, with Wynot coming away with a 25-21, 25-22 sweep of LCC in the best-of-three-sets match.

WAKEFIELD — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils and the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears met in the second match of a volleyball triangular played in Wakefield on Sept. 21, with Wynot coming away with a 25-21, 25-22 sweep of LCC in the best-of-three-sets match.

“We have really good leadership on this team,” Wynot coach Sidney Messersmith said. “Our seniors are very involved with the way this team plays; we’re kind of small, but we make up for it with hustle and attitude.”

The first set of the match was really tight throughout, especially in the early-going.

Wynot went up 7-6 with a Kenna Oligmueller winner off of the Lady Bear block.

The score was tied again at 7-7 after a Lady Blue Devil service error, but two kills by Kayla Pinkelman sandwiched around a second shot winner by Sophia Giesen put Wynot in front 107. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge answered with a Kaida Eriksen smash off the block that brought her team back to within 10-8. Another Pinkelman pace shot found the floor, but the Lady Bears were far from done.

Wynot made an error setting up the offense and then got called for two hits and suddenly the lead was down to one, 11-10.

“We just keep playing hard and focus on the point we’re playing,” said Lady Blue Devils senior Kinslee Heimes. “We know each other and know what we are all doing on the court; we just keep playing hard.”

A Heimes winner, one of her six in the match, made the score 16-11 and a 4-0 run was halted at 17-11 after LCC was called for four hits. The lead grew to 21-13 after a block by Allison Wieseler and Oligmueller, but the Lady Bears again came back.

Back-to-back kills by Tali Erwin, one off the Wynot touch and one straight down the net, made it 21-15. A Wynot hitting error, a winner by Wieseler for Wynot and another Erwin smash made it 22-17.

Delaney Johnson hit a winner for LCC; a kill by Mallory Eriksen and back-to-back ace serves by Carlie Kvols, the freshmen setter for the Lady Bears, forced Messersmith to call a timeout with the score 22-21.

Wynot closed out the set with a rejection at the net by Pinkelman and a tip kill from the Lady Blue Devils senior made it 24-21.

Oligmueller ended the set with a monster blast to the LCC side of the net.

The second set was also tight down the stretch as the teams were tied at 20-20 after an error by Wynot. Another error gave the Lady Bears a lead at 2120, but Laurel-Concord-Coleridge got in the net to even the set again, 22-22.

The teams traded four-hit violations to tie the score before a Lady Bear error made it 24-23 and forced Laurel-Concord- Coleridge coach Julie Kvols to call a timeout.

Pinkelman ended the set and the match with a slam off of an LCC overpass. The Lady Bears ended the tough night with a loss to Wakefield, while the Lady Blue Devils defeated the Lady Trojans before the match with Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.
