CREIGHTON — The Wynot Blue Devils football team kept its undefeated season going on Friday night as it easily dispatched the Creighton Bulldogs 54-14.
The Blue Devils built big leads in the first half as they were up 30-6 at the end of the first quarter and saw a running clock after halftime while improving to 5-0 on the season.
Host Creighton’s record slipped to 2-3 overall with the loss.
Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by Zack Foxhoven, who rushed for 101 yards on just seven carries, and Dylan Heine, who completed 11 passes for 155 yards and four touchdowns, with two of those scoring tosses going to Chase Schroeder.
The Bulldogs’ offense was led by Taylor Nilson, who ran for 66 yards and was 9-17 passing for 104 yards.
Wynot’s defense was paced by their linebackers, Foxhoven and Andrew Haberman, with nine and eight tackles each.
Foxhoven also had an interception and Brennan Heimes and Korbin Guenther each had a fumble recovery.
Creighton’s defensive unit was led by Jorgan Condon with eight tackles and Taylor Nilson with six stops and a sack.
The Blue Devils have been getting off to fast starts in their recent games and this one was no different. Wynot hit from long range early. A 34-yard touchdown strike from Dylan Heine to Joseph Sudbeck got the Blue Devils rolling to give Wynot the 6-0 lead.
The Bulldogs gave the ball back to the Blue Devils when Foxhoven’s interception and return to Creighton’s 30-yard line set up a short field for Wynot. Two plays later, Heine connected with Schroeder on the seam for a 34-yard scoring toss. Carson Wieseler caught the twopoint conversion pass as Wynot’s lead went to 14-0.
The Blue Devils’ offensive onslaught continued on their next possession. Set up by first-down catches by Schroeder and Carson Wieseler, Foxhoven blasted in from the one-yard line for the score. The two-point conversion was added by Heine as Wynot’s lead improved to 22-0.
At the four-minute mark, the Blue Devils’ offense took over again. Foxhoven broke over the left side of the line and galloped 20 yards to pay dirt. Heine to Joseph Sudbeck gave Wynot the 30-0 lead.
The Bulldogs showed signs of life late in the first quarter as they mounted a drive. Key first-down runs by Nilson and Condon helped the drive. Condon bulled his way in from 10 yards out for the touchdown to cap the drive. The first quarter ended with Wynot up 30-6.
After an exchange of possessions, the Creighton quarterback coughed the ball up and Brennan Heimes pounced on it at the 22-yard line. Wynot moved the ball quickly downfield. Foxhoven powered in up the middle from the five-yard line for the score. A Sudbeck catch added the two-point conversion as Wynot’s lead had ballooned to 38-6. Wynot added one more score before the half. Heine connected with Wieseler on the nine-yard touchdown pass into the left corner of the end zone. Heine then connected with Schroeder for the two-point conversion as the Blue Devils’ lead grew to 46-6. The half ended on a muffed kickoff by Creighton that was recovered by Korbin Guenther.
The second half featured a running clock and a chance to see reserves get a lot of playing time.
The Bulldogs tried to get something going, but Wynot took over on the 22-yard line. Runs by Foxhoven and Wieseler gave them a first down.
Back-to-back holding penalties moved the ball back to the 20-yard line. Foxhoven ripped off an 11-yard run and then Heine connected with Wieseler for a nine-yard touchdown toss. Foxhoven added the two-point conversion as the Blue Devils’ lead moved to 54-6.
Creighton’s offense mounted a drive near the end of the third quarter. Catches of 10 and 24 yards by Condon fueled the drive.
Nilson scampered in from 26 yards out for the touchdown. Condon bulled in for the two-point conversion as the third quarter ended with the Blue Devils in the lead 54-14.
Reserves played the final quarter with no further scoring taking place.
