Fence, HVAC next to be installed at tower site

HARTINGTON – Cedar County's new emergency communications tower site will soon have a new HVAC system and fence around the property.

HARTINGTON — Cedar County's new emergency communications tower site will soon have a new HVAC system and fence around the property.

Kevin Garvin, the county's director of emergency management and 911 communications coordinator, provided the board of commissioners with a tower project update on Sept. 12.

“The concrete portion of the (support building) roof is on and the tower crew is on site installing antennas,” Garvin said in a follow-up interview.

“The concrete on the roof isn’t sufficient to keep out the water, so we had to take temporary measures until the permanent rubber membrane

roof can be installed,” he said.

Garvin said tower crew members will not allow anyone to work on the site outside of the support building while they are on the tower, which is located about two miles north of Hartington.

“This is for safety concerns in case something would drop off the tower while they are working,” Garvin said, noting the tower crew has about two weeks of work left to do.

He and the commissioners discussed two price quotes the county received on the HVAC – heating, ventilation and air conditioning – system for the tower site.

Art Kathol Appliance Inc., Bow Valley, submitted a price quote of $12,250, while Kaiser Heating &

Cooling Inc., Yankton, S.D., turned in a price quote of $12,876.

“The board decided that we should accept the quote from Art Kathol Appliance – as it was the cheaper of the two – for a Bosch heat pump system,” Garvin said.

He and the commissioners also discussed two price quotes the county received on a fence to go around the tower site property – $31,159 from NoSwett Fencing & Decks, Columbus, and $37,334.80 from Cardis Fence & Iron Co., Sioux City, Iowa.

“The board had questions regarding some discrepancies between the two quotes,” Garvin said. “Pending resolution of the discrepancies, the board decided to go with NoSwett Fencing.”
