HARTINGTON — C.M. “Charley” Jones, 88, pioneer Hartington businessman and longtime Sheriff of Cedar County, died Tuesday morning at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. where he had been a patient for more than a year.
Mr. Jones had been a familiar figure in Hartington from 1886 until slightly more than a year ago when he went Sacred Heart Hospital to live because of his failing health. .
Mr. Jones came to Cedar County in 1883. When he first arrive here, he located in the St. James community, where he farmed.
He later did overland freight hauling from St. Helena to the new town of Hartington. In 1886 he moved to Hartington to operate a store for Henry Felber.He served as deputy sheriff was elected as Cedar County sheriff in 1887. He served as county sheriff for 10 years.
