Trojans get back on winning track against LVSS

HARTINGTON – After dropping a game for the first time this season, Cedar Catholic responded with a resounding win over Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 42-7 at the Hartington Community Complex Sept. 15 in the Trojans’ Homecoming football game.

HARTINGTON — After dropping a game for the first time this season, Cedar Catholic responded with a resounding win over Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 42-7 at the Hartington Community Complex Sept. 15 in the Trojans’ Homecoming football game.

“It was a good bounce-back win for us after losing last week,” Cedar Catholic coach Chad Cattau said. “I thought our kids had a good week of preparation and we really worked to improve on a lot of things.”

The Trojans were quite defensive in the win, limiting LV/SS to just 80 yards rushing on the night and 116 passing, which included a 61-yard pass play for a touchdown late in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, Trojan signal-caller Braeden Reifenrath was having the night of his life.

Reifenrath ran for 147 yards on just seven carries, one for a 69-yard dash to pay dirt, and he threw for 208 yards on a 14-for-20 performance and two scores.

“I really liked our balance we were able to show in this game,” Cattau said. “We had a variety of guys that were successful in running the ball and our passing game showed a lot of good things — if we can have success with that kind of balance, we will continue to have success and show improvement.”

Reifenrath did the honors early, capping off a Cedar Catholic drive with a one-yard plunge, and after a Bodie Hochstein kick, the Trojans were up 7-0.

Jaymison Cattau snared a 19-yard aerial from Reifenrath later in the first quarter and another Hochstein kick made it 14-0. Cattau caught five passes from Reifenrath, which was good for 90 yards.

“I though we did some of the smaller things better that helped us out throughout the game,” Cattau said. “We still need to do a better job overall with our tackling, but it is something we will work hard on improving this week.”

That slight weakness was evident on the Raiders’ next possess when Josh Egbers broke free on the 61-yard pass play late in the first to get his team back to within a single score, 14-7.

Cedar Catholic’s Ty Thoene scored in the second frame from 20 yards out to push the lead back to a couple of touch downs before Breiton Whitmire scored from the 15 to make it 28-7. Whitmire finished the night with 97 yards on the ground on just eight carries.

Reifenrath took off on his 69-yard scamper to the end zone late in the half to send the teams to the locker room with his squad in the lead 35-7 after Hochstein made his fi fth extra-point try of the evening.

It was more of the same in the third quarter when Karsan Albers scored from 11 yards out, and with another kick from Hochstein, the continuous clock was enacted the rest of the way.

The teams played between the 20s from there and the final score was set.

Defensively, Cedar Catholic was paced by Thoene with 6.5 tackle points, Cattau had five, and Albers, Reifenrath and Brady Hochstein each had four. Grayden Hochstein had a tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Cedar Catholic will hit the road for a tough district battle between a couple of Class C2 powers. The Trojans head south to take on another state-rated foe in Oakland-Craig on Sept. 22 with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
