RANDOLPH - With an enrollment of 212 the St. Frances grade and high schools have the largest enrollment in history, Sr. M. Digna, school principal announced this week. The enrollment is a slight increase over 208 last year.
An enrollment increase of 17 in the Randolph public schools was reported Wednesday by Supt. J. F. Callaway, who announced the total enrollment was 205, compared to 188 last year.

RANDOLPH- The baseball game of the year - Country Gentlemen vs. Randolph Slickers - will be held in the city park Tuesday night, September 14, at eight o’clock.
The Park Improvement club is sponsoring the game between these two teams, proceeds of which will go into a fund to buy playground equipment for the park. The Country Gentlemen will be managed by Ed Gerber and Harold Paulson and the Slickers by Wade Chapman.

RANDOLPH - Gerard Bermel, young Randolph farmer, suffered a severe cut in the lower left leg Friday morning when cut by a sickle of a combine, when the combine accidentally rolled forward.
He was attended by a local physician and is recovering satisfactorily.

RANDOLPH – The School Board of District No. 45, begins advertising for bids for construction of Randolph’s new school.
The advertisement for bids will be published for three weeks. Bids will be opened at the Randolph Public School on Thursday, Oct. 10.
Plans for the structure have been prepared by B.H. Backlund and Associates, Inc., Architects-Engineers of Omaha. All general mechanical and electrical work will be let in one combined contract.
The project consists of a gymnasium- auditorium, two story elementary wing and dining area and kitchen.

RANDOLPH – Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Winkelbauer accompanied by Bill Winkelbauer and Tom Wattier went to Sioux City, Ia. on Thursday, August 29, where Bill and Tom boarded a plane for Washington, D.C.
They will attend a construction school which is held at Fort Belvoir, Va. They had finished their basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and arrived home on Aug. 17.
Bill Winkelbauer received an Expert Rifleman’s medal during his training at Fort Leonard Wood.

RANDOLPH – A mishap Saturday night on the Highway 59 detour near Magnet resulted in considerable damage to three autos.
Donald Hoppe had slid into the ditch from the road, made slippery by rain. Stuart Nelson of Norfolk slid into the ditch also, while attempting to get the Hoppe auto out. The two autos were struck by another driven by Joe Anderson, as he came over the hill.
Additional gravel has been placed on the road to avoid future trouble there.

RANDOLPH – Another school year is well underway in Randolph with an enrollment of 739 boys and girls in the Randolph Public School system, according to figures released by Supt. Neil Kluver.

RANDOLPH – Northwestern Bell Telephone Company filed an application this week with the Nebraska Public Service Commission, asking for authority to increase telephone rates within Nebraska.
The application requests millions in additional revenues, nearly an eight percent overall increase in the company’s annual revenues from in-state services.

RANDOLPH – In second round action in the Randolph Golf Tournament, Lyle Nanen defeated Roger Johnson and George Whitney won over Neil Kluver in the championship flight.
The championship flight has been completed as George Whitney won over defending champion Lyle Nannen to take the championship.
In the first flight Jack Sauser bested Gordon Boatman to gain the finals against the winner of Jack Reed and Paul Tunink.

RANDOLPH – City Foreman LeRoy Brummels this week asks for the cooperation of all residents that will be affected by a water outage on Friday afternoon.
Mr. Brummels said the water will be shut off from the corner of Broadway Street where W.M. Galvin Implement is located west to Highway 20 near the Frances Jensen home.
The curtailment of water service will be the purpose of replacing a fire hydrant near St. John’s Lutheran church and will only be off for the amount to time necessary to change the hydrant.

RANDOLPH – The Randolph High Cards opened the season Friday night as they rolled to an impressive 31-0 win over the Laurel football team.
The Cards will play their home opener on Friday night when Plainview will furnish the opposition on the local field. Kick-off will be at 7:30 p.m.

RANDOLPH – Enrollment at the Randolph Public Schools, as released by the school system lists a total of 481 students registered to attend classes for the coming school year. This is an increase of 18 students over last year’s enrollment of 463.
The K-6 portion had 265 students registered. A total of 80 students are registered in junior high. In the senior high, 136 students are attending classes at RHS.

RANDOLPH – Lisa Linville will be teaching junior high science. She is in her ninth year of teaching. Previously she taught high school biology and physical science at Beloti, Kansas, and high school science at Jewel, Kansas. Her husband, Mark Linville is employed at First State Bank.
Kent Nielsen will be teaching English to eighth grade, sophomore and college preps students. He will also be teaching drama, composition and literature. Last year, Nielsen worked as a substitute teacher in Lincoln. In addition to writing poetry and short stories, Nielsen said he is also working on a play.

RANDOLPH – School board members met Monday evening, Aug. 30 at the east school.
Although the total property tax requirement increase is 5 percent over last year, a 2.3 percent increase will be felt because of an increased valuation.
Property owners will probably see a school levy reduction compared with last year of three cents per $100 valuation. Last year’s school levy was around $1.03 and this year property owners can figure an estimate of $1 per $100 valuation. The $1 school levy covers general fund and special building fund needs, according to Superintendent James Troshynski.

RANDOLPH – Randolph Public Schools activities are underway leading to Coronation for Homecoming 2003. High school and grade school students are participating in sharing their spirit with different themes each day throughout this week. Homecoming queen candidates are seniors Kerrie Winkelbauer, daughter of Roger and Sharolyn Winkelbauer, Karissa Dominisse, daughter of Rick and Karen Dominisse, Tiffany Kruse, daughter of Cary and Mary Kruse, Sheila Korth, daughter of Rick and Sue Korth. King candidates are seniors Bryce Whalen, son of Dave and Rhonda Whalen, Nick Haselhorst, son of Chuck and Jolene Haselhorst, Cody Backer, son of Rick and Sandy Backer, Bryan Alderson, son of Rick and Vickie Alderson. Coronation will be at approximately 10:30 p.m. in the Randolph High School commons on Friday, Sept. 12.

RANDOLPH – The Randolph Board of Education held a budget workshop on Sept. 4 to discuss the planned budget for the 2003-04 school year.
Superintendent Ted Hillman explained the Randolph school district had the highest increase in property valuation of the schools in the area other than the Plaivnewi district. Plainview’s district includes the new ethanol plant which explains their increase, he said.
The huge increase in the Randolph district was due to the price increase in ag land sales recently - especially land in Southern Cedar County, Hillman said.

RANDOLPH – Randolph Area Foundation president, Dan Tunink, presented Suz Gubbels, library building fund treasurer, with a pledge of $15,000.00 to the new library, more specifically their donation will be used for the Genealogy room in the library. The Randolph Area Foundation and the Randolph Public Library strive to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Randolph and the surrounding area. The library has copies of past issues of the Randolph Times, they are also available on microfilm. The addition of a Genealogy room will be a great assist to the library and the community and will allow many to research past generations.

RANDOLPH – The St. Frances de Chantal Catholic Church has had quite a bit of repairs made to it over the summer months.
New sidewalk was poured early this summer and work on the roof and steeple areas was recently completed.

RANDOLPH – The county is again setting aside funds so they can continue making payments for the new 911 wireless system.
At their Aug. 27 meeting, the Cedar county Commissioners approved putting away 75 percent of the 911 funds they receive from the state. A motion was necessary Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling told the Board.
The motion was made by District 1 Commissioner Terry Pinkelman and seconded by District 3 Commissioner Dave McGregor.
