Wynot Blue Devils grind out win over state-rated Flyers

HUMPHREY – In a battle of state-rated football teams, the Wynot Blue Devils downed the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers 14-6 Friday night on the road.

HUMPHREY — In a battle of state-rated football teams, the Wynot Blue Devils downed the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers 14-6 Friday night on the road.

The Blue Devils’ aerial attack and the Flyers’ ground game were on full display in the game as both teams moved the ball between the 20-yard lines.

The defensive units were able to stiffen and keep the other team out of end zone on several drives.

Wynot’s offense was led by Carson Wieseler, with eight receptions for 107 yards, a touchdown and a rushing score.

The Flyers’ offense was paced by Ethan Wieseler, with 11 carries for 47 yards, and Carson Wessel, who rushed 22 times for 42 yards.

The Blue Devils’ defense was led by Zack Foxhoven, with 15 tackles, followed by Kasen Koch with 14, and Andrew Haberman with 13 stops.

Humphrey St. Francis’ defensive leader Ethan Wieseler led the way with 15 tackles and Carson Wessel finished with 13.

Tucker Czarnick also had a pair of interceptions for the Flyers.

Wynot struck first at the seven-minute mark of the opening quarter.

Carson Wieseler went up to out-battle a Flyer defender for a 45-yard catch and run.

Dylan Heine connected with Wieseler for the two-point conversion as Wynot held an early 8-0 lead.

The Flyers were able to drive down field on the ground, but the Blue Devils’ defense was able to stall them at the 22--yard line as the first quarter ended with Wynot leading 8-0.

The Blue Devils opened the second quarter and marched quickly downfield.

Carson Wieseler caught a pair of 13-yard gains and added a 10-yard run to fuel the drive. The Flyers’ defense stopped the drive when Tyler Czarnick picked off a Blue Devil pass at the 15-yard line.

Wynot’s defense was playing well as Flyer drives were stopped by sacks from Alex Sudbeck and Chase Schroeder on a pair of third-down plays. The half ended with the Blue Devils clinging to the 8-0 lead.

Wynot opened the third quarter with a scoring drive. Helped along the way by an 18-yard reception by Joesph Sudbeck and an 11-yard catch-and-run by Carson Wieseler, the Blue Devils were on the doorstep of the end zone again.

Carson Wieseler capped the drive when he powered in from the one-yard line for his second touchdown of the game. The two-point conversion run was stopped and Wynot had increased its lead to 14-0.

Humphrey St. Francis answered back with a scoring drive of its own. Behind the hard running of Ethan Wieseler and Carson Wessel, the Flyers put together a drive of their own.

Carson Wessel helped the Flyers move across midfield. He broke free over the left side of the Blue Devils’ line and race 22 yards to pay dirt.

The two-point conversion attempt failed because of a bad snap, but the Flyers were now within one score, trailing 14-6.

Defense dominated the fourth quarter.

The Flyers’ defensive unit stopped two Blue Devil drives with a fumble recovery and an interception.

Wynot’s defense was also stout. Zack Foxhoven had a fumble recovery and Andrew Haberman had a key tackle for a loss.

The Blue Devils took over their final possession at the 2:59 mark and ran out the clock to earn the 14-6 win.

Wynot hosts another ranked opponent this Friday when the Howells-Dodge Jaguars come calling.

The Huskerland Prep Report tabbed the game as the Eight-Man Football Game of the Year.
