LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears took a while to get started in the opening game of the 2023 football season, but once they got started, they had little trouble in taking care of Guardian Angels Central Catholic here at Haskell Field, coming away with a 26-13 win on Aug. 25 to open the season 1-0.

The Bluejays scored first in the opening quarter on a one-yard run, but the Bears answered in the second quarter with a couple of touchdowns to take the lead for good.

Dylan Taylor looked good under center for coach Alan Gottula’s team and found Carter Kvols from 69 yards away on pass play to get LCC on the board in the second frame, but after the two-point run failed, the Bears still trailed GACC, 7-6.

Later in the second, Taylor spotted Gibson Roberts on an 18-yard pass for the second score of the quarter and the season for another score and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had its first lead of the game, 12-7 as the teams headed into the halftime break.

The LCC lead grew in the second half when when Eli Haisch took a handoff from Taylor and ran around the Bluejay defense from 32 yards away for a score and after Caleb Erwin blasted in for the conversion, the Bears were in control 20-7.

In the fourth, Taylor, who would finish with 79 yards on the ground, scored from five yards away to put the game on ice, 26-7.

Late in the game, GACC got back on the board with a score from 24 yards away to get to the 26-13 final.

Taylor accumulated 128 yards through the air with 110 of those yards coming from Kvols who hauled in five aerials including the 69-yard score.

Roberts finished with one catch for the 18yard touchdown.

Defensively, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge held the Bluejays to 148 yards on the ground and 82 yards through the air.

Connor Korth and Kvols paced the defense with six tackles each. Taylor added five with a fumble recovery and a tackle behind the line.

Korth and Walker Stone each had a couple of tackles behind the line of scrimmage, Kayton Hall had one tackle for a loss.

The Bears will remain at home this week when they host Wisner-Pilger, which lost to Lutheran High Northeast, 40-12 in its opening game of the season last week.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. back here at Haskell Field on Sept. 1.
