NSAA makes a few tweaks

LINCOLN – The State playoff system for Class C2 high school football teams is changing this season.

LINCOLN — The State playoff system for Class C2 high school football teams is changing this season.

The change was highlighted during a joint NSAA and media meeting held recently.

In the past, the Nebraska School Activities Association has tried to ensure that multiple teams would get the chance to host a playoff game. First-round games were always hosted by the higher seed, but second-round games would be hosted by a lower seed if that team did not host in the first round.

Beginning this year, the higherseeded team could play at home all the way to the title game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, said NSAA Associate Director for Football Nate Newhaus.

Class A, B and C1 schools have used this method for several years, now. The change in C2 came about because of a request by a member school, which was then approved by the NSAA Board of Directors.

Newhaus said one other change this year affects schools that forfeit a football game. The school that forfeits a contest could be subject to a fine. The fine would be paid to the school that would have hosted the forfeited game to make up for a loss in gate and concession revenue.

Newhaus said since the NSAA is currently in its second year of its twoyear scheduling cycle, the association will soon begin the task of reclassification and putting together districts and schedules for the next two years.

Some changes have also been made concerning the State track meet, he said.

After a contentious debate, Newhaus said, a couple of additional events will now have finals only, eliminating the preliminary round of competition at the State track meet.
