Kuehn’s Kork ’n Kap started things off 50 years ago

HARTINGTON – Some Hartington area residents thought Jim and Jeaneen Kuehn were crazy when they launched a new business 50 years ago this week.

HARTINGTON — Some Hartington area residents thought Jim and Jeaneen Kuehn were crazy when they launched a new business 50 years ago this week.

The couple had owned and operated the Chief Bar from 1965-70 before building a liquor store called Kuehn’s Kork ’n Kap on a barren lot purchased from Glen and Josephine Lukes in 1972.

The Kuehns were gracious and generous to the patrons who became friends. Just as much then as now, the liquor store gives back in a variety of ways to local communities, schools and churches.

In 1998, the Kuehns were honored with the “25 Years In Business” award from the Hartington Chamber of Commerce.

In later years, they changed the name to Kuehn’s Package Liquor and that name has stayed in some form with every new owner since.

The Kuehns retired Oct. 1, 2001. They sold the business to Scott McCaw, who changed the name to Scott’s Package Liquor and he owned the business from 2001-06.

Scott and Sheila Ulrich purchased the business in 2006 and ran it together until they sold it in 2014 to the present owners, Keith and Michelle Loecker.

The Loeckers changed the store name to Keith’s Package Liquor (for obvious reasons) when they purchased it.

At the time of purchasing the business, Keith was looking for a way to get back into the community after working in South Dakota for many years. He found that opportunity in the liquor store.

He always finds time to visit with his customers and answer questions. He values the friendships he’s made.

Following the tradition of the Kuehn family 50 years ago, the Loeckers and their valued employees continue to be gracious and generous to the many patrons who have become friends.

Anyone who walks in is assured that “What happens at Keith’s, stays at Keith’s!”

July 4, 2023, marked 50 years of this business in its original building and location.

Thanks to the current owners, Keith and Michelle, and the community who supports the liquor store, it remains a thriving business in Hartington.
