LAUREL — As a result of a battle with two bandits early Friday Morning, Dr. C. C. Sackett and H. C.
Crownover were shot and lost their lives and John Newman is in St.
Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City, with a gun shot through his right arm.
Dr. Claude Conwell Sackett was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. D.
M. Sackett and was born on a farm near Dudley, Iowa, June 29, 1875, and spent his boyhood on another farm a few miles away near the town of Chillicothe, Iowa. He graduated from the medical department of the Iowa State University at Iowa City, April 15, 1898, and came directly to Laurel, where he has practiced ever since. June 5, 1901 he was married to Myrtle Brooks at Seward.
To them were born two children, Kathleen, 14, and Brooks, 10, who with their mother, survived.
Harold Clair Crownover was born at Syracuse, Feb. 2, 1896. He was working for the Nebraska Telephone Company.

HARTINGTON — The county council of defense will be enlarged in size, according to Dr. P. O. Robinson, who was elected to be chairman.

HARTINGTON — Bryon Jones, son of County Commissioner Albert Jones, is serving in the hospital corps in France.

HARTINGTON —Cedar County residents have gotten a lot wealthier during the past few years or have become much more truthful in making out their tax returns.
The first five precincts who reported show a great increase in the value of personal property during the past year.
