Juniors team still looking for first taste of victory

PONCA- In a pitching duel, Randolph’s Junior Legion team came up with the short straw against Ponca Monday night.

PONCA- In a pitching duel, Randolph’s Junior Legion team came up with the short straw against Ponca Monday night.

The juniors team lost in an 8-0 fifth-inning run rule shutout.

The game was a pitchers’ duel all the way up until the bottom of the fifth inning where Ponca piled on seven runs after only having one run coming into it.

Kaleb Gardner threw four great innings for Randolph, only allowing two hits and having six strikeouts. Only one runner crossed the plate when he was on the mound. In a struggle all season, the juniors did not have a single hit the whole game.

Still looking for its first win of the season, the juniors will face off against Twin Rivers Thursday, June 15.

Randolph’s Junior Legion fell short in a seven-inning contest against Orchard that ended with a score of 9-3 at Randolph Area Veterans Memorial Park last week.

This was the Juniors’ second matchup against Orchard with the first contest being a run-rule loss of 13-5. Just as in the first matchup, one inning made all the difference with Orchard scoring five runs in the second inning. With a commanding 6-1 control of the game after the second inning, Randolph found it difficult to overcome the early deficit, only scoring two more runs after the first inning.

Randolph’s pitching and defense showed up after the second inning, allowing only three runs for the rest of the game.

Pitching was not the highlight of the game for the juniors but Ryan Engel threw two strikeouts in two innings. Dayton Winkelbauer also came in for the last inning and pitched a scoreless seventh inning, earing a strikeout along the way.

Randolph only had one less hit than Orchard but they couldn’t capitalize with runners on the bases. Dylan Schutt continues to be a great bat for the juniors as he tallied two hits and two RBIs.
