1948: VFW Auxiliary earns recognition

LINCOLN - The Randolph Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary received state recognition at the State VFW encampment in Lincoln last week, when the auxiliary was presented a $25 check for the greatest percentage of membership gain in the state.

The presentation was made at the business meeting on Monday, June 7, and was accepted on behalf of the auxiliary by its president, Mrs. Wayne Ewing.

Mrs. Helen Dwyer, Miss Marianne Van Slyke, and Mrs. Ewing accompanied Elmer Munter to Lincoln to attend the encampment which was held June 6, 7 and 8 at the Lincoln hotel. Mr. Munter represented the local post as commander, and the auxiliary sent the two delegates, Mrs. Dwyer and Miss Van Slyke, and the president Mrs. Ewing.

June 13, 1963

RANDOLPH - Turbulent weather struck the northeast section of the state over a wide area Sunday afternoon, causing property damage and also personal injuries.

Twisters developed in several areas and there were reports of hail damage at scattered points.

At the Elmer Bodenstedt farm about five miles east of Randolph a 26x36’ barn was totally demolished. Also damaged was a corn crib and chimneys on the house were destroyed. There was also extensive damage to trees on the place.

A few miles from the Bodenstedt farm, the storm struck the Bible camp near Belden at which Mr. and Mrs. Albert Flanders were observing their 50th wedding anniversary. Tops of trees were broken off, and although many cars were parked in the area, only one was damaged by falling limbs.

The windshield of the car was broken. It was reported that persons in the building at the camp witnessed the tail of a funnel cloud that hit the area.

RANDOLPH - The Randolph High School Alumni Association met at the Randolph City auditorium Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

A buffet pot luck dinner was enjoyed by 125 alumni and guests. Table decorations were in red and white, “Hats off to the Alumni” theme. The class of 1973 were guests.

Marvin Weyhrich, president, conducted the business meeting.

Zach Boughn was master of ceremonies.

Miss Mary Hansen, valedictorian of 1973 greeted the Alumni.

A letter from Charles Thone, representative to Congress, was read to the group.

In a guessing contest of the actual number of graduates since 1893 Darrel May placed first and Harold Sherwood placed second. The actual count is 1824.

RANDOLPH - One of the shortest Randolph City Council meetings in the last several months was held on Tuesday night and only a light agenda needed taking care of.

Several visitors took up a good share of the two-hour meeting as KN Energy Manager Gordon Boatman and Brian Bernhard from B & E Engineering of Yankton, So. Dak. addressed the group.

Mr. Boatman explained his company’s new gas rates that will end up saving gas customers in Randolph money from a year ago. He said that between now and the end of November the gas rates will be lowered a total of 18.2c per 1000 cu. ft. Along with the good news from the gas company, Mr. Boatman also told the council that as of June 1st service for after hour problems will be charged for and explained the charges. Mr. Boatman stressed that the charges being affected would only be for after regular working hours, holiday calls or weekend calls.

June 16, 1983

RANDOLPH - With less than a month remaining before the annual Randolph Community Club Fair, the committees involved and several other activities are announced this week by the general chairmen.

In making the announcement of the committees, the General Chairmen Don Bermel and Vernon Viergutz also said that the nominations for the Employee of the Year are still being received and should be done before Thursday, June 30.

Persons wishing to nominate employees are asked to submit their nominees in writing to Tom Riedmiller, secretary of the club. Nominations can be left at the First State Bank.

Also announced by the club are the judges for this year’s fair. Joe Bystandig will judge the livestock and farm mechanics while Mrs. Dean Metz and Mrs. Dan Kock will judge the home economics.

June 16,1993

RANDOLPH - On Monday evening at the regular school board meeting, June 14, board members decided to have a workshop session with The Architectural Partnership the school has been working with on building needs.

The board member workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, June 30, 7 p.m. east school. The purpose is to achieve a more specific plan for the future of Randolph’s school building.

The school board approved golf as a school activity to begin with the 1993-94 school year. Before approving the activity, members discussed the pros and cons of adding golf as an activity taking into consideration whether adding another activity on an increasingly full schedule is needed. Superintendent Neil Kluver offered his services to coach RHS golf.

June 16,1993

RANDOLPH - New rules regarding golf carts and other similar vehicles on city streets were set officially Thursday, June 10, 9 a.m. during a city council public hearing.

In addition to the special vehicle ordinance, the council approved an application for a Class I liquor license for the Randolph Community Golf Course, Inc.

After an executive session to discuss personnel, Randy Beck was hired as an electrical supervisor trainee at $11 per hour with six months probation.

The ordinance passed by the council applies to golf carts, offroad recreational vehicles and other powered vehicles on the streets of the city of Randolph.

June 18, 2003

RANDOLPH- The public will have the opportunity to learn more about the proposed Randolph Public Library building at a town hall meeting at the Randolph Jr./Senior High School commons on Monday, June 23 at 7:30 pm.

Professional Associates, the firm chosen to design the new library, and members of the library’s Building Committee, will present the forum.

Those attending the program will be able to view plans for the new building and ask questions about construction and project funding.

Tours of the existing library will be available at 6:30 p.m. prior to the meeting, and will continue immediately after the forum.

June 18, 2003

RANDOLPH - Gary Weldon, ventriloquist, of Pisgah, Iowa will bring his free kids show to Veterans Memorial Park Shelter House in Randolph on Wednesday, June 25, at 10 a.m.

The show includes some Magic, Ventriloquism and the Stars of the Show…The DEW IT - SAYNO Puppets. In addition, some “Local Stars” will also be on stage!

It will be a Fun Time for all attending.

There is no charge to the kids, as several local sponsors have underwritten the costs for this show. In addition to being entertaining, the puppets also have a serious side to their part of the show, the kids are taught how to deal with a friend who tries to get them in trouble.

RANDOLPH - Randolph City Council discussed the benefits of hiring an economic development coordinator for the City, selected the logo for the water tower and learned the Fire Department will be getting some new equipment.

Councilman Tim Lemmons was thanked for the work he put into applying for a grant for the Randolph Fire Department.

A FEMA Assistance to Firefighter Grant in the amount $78,200 will be used to purchase 12 new SCBA units which are breathing apparatuses.

The grant portion of the funds is $74,290. A five percent share in the amount of $3,910 will come from the City and the Rural Fire Department, according to Lemmons.

NORFOLK - The community of Randolph will have the honor of watching three hometown basketball athletes compete in this Friday’s 30th Annual Northeast Nebraska All-Star Basketball games in Norfolk.

Tip off for the girls’ game is set for 6 p.m. and the boys’ game is set to begin at 8 p.m. at the Cox Activity Center at the Northeast Community College campus.

Earning a place on the Boy’s Dark Team roster is senior Grant Anderson.

Son of Mark and Tracy Anderson, Grant has spent most of his life surrounded by the game of basketball and watched his older brother, Blake, compete in the All-Star game when he was a senior.
