YANKTON, S.D. — The Wynot Expos held on to take a 6-5 South Central South Dakota League baseball contest from the Yankton Tappers on June 11.
The game was quite a turnaround from their first meeting of the year, when the Tappers defeated the Expos in the season opener, 12-2.
Wynot grabbed the lead with a couple of runs in the top of the first inning, but Yankton responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame.
The Tappers grabbed a lead in the fifth inning with a couple of runs to make it 3-2, but the Expos answered in the top of the sixth to retake the lead with two runs and then added two runs in the top of the seventh to go up 6-3.
Wynot starting pitcher Peyton Wieseler went the distance, but not without some tense moments in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Wieseler got two outs to open the final frame on a strike-out and a ground ball to Jackson Sudbeck at shortstop.
A single past Sudbeck and a single on a line drive to left field put Yankton on first and third bases with two outs.
A double to center field scored two runs and left runners on second and third bases with two outs.
The final Tappers batter flew out to Wieseler and the win was preserved.
Wieseler helped his own cause with a tworun double in the first inning, which scored Landon Wieseler and Lee Heimes, and a tworun blast to right field in the sixth, which also chased home Heimes.
Lee Heimes and Ryan Heimes also doubled in the contest, and Lee Heimes and Landon Wieseler each scored two runs.
Wynot is set to host the Crofton Bluejays June 18 before hitting the road to take on the Tabor Bluebirds June 22.
