HARTINGTON — The Hartington Hares picked up a win in Cedar County League action, won a Tri-County League game, and fell to Ralston over the weekend.

The Hares beat St. Helena 14-5 with the help of a solo home run by Dennis Schmitz. They beat Battle Creek 22-15 and lost to Ralston 18-16.

HARTINGTON — Construction began in California this week on a cheese plant which is being developed by Hartington native Mike Neu.

June 15, 1988 HARTINGTON — The Hartington American Legion team defeated Coleridge 11-1 in a five-inning game which was stopped due to the 10-run rule.

HARTINGTON—Cedar County Sheriff Allan Guern came out the loser Tuesday in a brutal power struggle with Cedar County Commissioners. The power struggle over the Cedar County Sheriff’s office resulted in the dismissal of one deputy and the refusal to accept a $200,000 federal law enforcement grant.

June 10, 1998

HARTINGTON — A man who pled guilty to escaping from the Cedar County jail in March was sentenced to six months in jail. Joseph A. Murrill was charged with felony counts of escape, conspiracy, and criminal mischief from the March 29 incident, in which a piece of exercise equipment was thrown through a window at the jail.

HARTINGTON—Wind, rain and hail storms swept through Cedar County Monday night.

The storms also spawned at least three tornadoes, in Northern Nebraska, including one that damaged two farm houses in the O’Neill area.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council has scratched an agreement with Alltel Cellular from their agenda.

Since last fall, the two have been trying to reach an agreement which would allow Alltel to place an antenna on the water tower.

HARTINGTON — Several area 4-H members received awards at the Northeast Regional 4-H Public Speaking Contest at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk.

Three youths were there to represent Cedar County.

Emma Lammers received a purple ribbon and is a state alternate in the senior division. Alexis Arens was a top four purple winner in her junior division. Sarah Lammers received a blue ribbon for a junior division speech.

FORDYCE — Rain dampened the ground, but couldn’t dampen the spirits of area residents during the Fordyce Centennial celebration here Saturday.

Over 2,000 people turned out to see an hour-long parade featuring over 104 entries from across the region.

The parade staging area behind the church and ball field stretched for nearly a mile. The parade then entertained people of all ages as it wound its way through Fordyce.

The rain came down hard during the parade, but it didn’t bother the Fordyce failthful.

“At first I was very sad because I was really hoping for a beautiful day,” said Centennial Committee member Ruth Wielbelhaus. “Then I thought, we need the rain, now the farmers can be here.”
